Rescuing an abandoned 406 2.1 TD

Last week i've done some more work, started by removing the dashboard. Then the front carpet, i pressure washed it and all other panels i could. I used a bunch of chemicals to get the carpets and panels clean. I also started to take apart the dashboard so i can clean the ventilation passages. With the parts drying for few days on the 40 degrees sun the trunk panel was dry. So i collected all the parts for the trunk door and put it together, also i glue the badges. I did one upgrade that took me an entire evening, that is running the wiring and installing the 22sm speakers in the trunk they are about 500w together, so i'll be running a amp in one of the side panels to supply them, i run 2,5 mm speaker wire to both of them to say it was a tight squeeze in the factory conduit is an understatement but i made it work.

Today i had a whole day to work on this car, it may look the same but i managed to install the front carpet, headliner then had to take it down because i forgot the roof rails. Install them i used some windscreen silicone around the holes to keep it watertight put up the headliner. Then i moved to the trunk, wipe down everything with alcohol, and installed the amplifier for the additional speakers and run the wires up to the front. Then i installed the spare tire, tool kit, covers and side panels. With that done, i took off the rear bumper, install the black trim and reassemble the bumper, also install the tail lights and rear inner fenders i use cavity wax under the inner fenders. last job i did is to wash all the ventilation parts for the dash also i had to transfer the airbag mount and bag in the new dashboard.

I've been working on this project every time i have time to spare. The dashboard get assembled and installed, the steering column as well. The back carpet was also dry to it got installed. The door trim also got installed, only one in the back was striking out so i used some windscreen glue and a micrometer to hold it in place. After this i got to washing and cleaning. The inside trim plastics got washed, and the seats got washes with some dry washing chemicals. Las on the list wore the door cards, they did not get washed but got glue to repair them.

With the seats out on the summer heat you can also use a carpet cleaning machine on them.

It works really well but dirty seats can get very wet in the process so it's not good if you left them to dry inside the car.

I don't have a carpet cleaning machine, i do have a good way of cleaning them using foam and very little water. The seats are already bone dry it was 41 celsius last few days. By any chance are you on the europ raid this year SRDT ?

You usually borrow or rent one for a day or even half a day.

I don't know how expensive it is to do so where you live but cleaning foam can't be cheap either when you have really dirty seats.

As for th europ raid nope I'm not in it, I don't even own a 205.

I use a chemical for cleaning in little water, then mix it with a nylon brush on a drill that make lots of foam, i grab it with the same brush on the cordless drill and apply and adjust it with the brush. Then i vacuum it is with my shop vac, and wipe it down with towels. The chemical cost me less then 1 euro for 0,5l that last me 4-5 years.

The seats are bone dry, so one by one i carry and install them. Also i install the centre console, that i used the console and switches from the parts car because it has switches for the heated seats the plugs were there. I also apply black vinyl on the window pillows.

Today was a long day in the garage, started with connecting the Lexia 3 diagnostic. I have the airbag light blinking ever since i bought it, the codes for the seats don't corner me i connected them with the battery conected, the steering wheel track seems to be the problem, to be sure i took off the airbag connected the one from the other car. The code is still present, next i took off the track from the parts car and connected the original airbag and connected it in place the code went away. With that tested i took off the steering wheel, changed the track and took the wheel and pressure washed it, it looked clean and i wiped it with wet wipes but you'll be surprised how much brown water come out. After i mount it i decided it's the best time to sew on a leather cover, this took me some time but i managed to make it with no big ripples. After that i wet sand the headlights, try polishing them but wasn't my day also the battery on my drill was acting up. So i moved to assembling the windows and the door trim, this took a lot of effort, soapy water and patience, i used the better trim from the parts car and some from this one.

A Whole day of working on it and is almost complete, the door panels get fit ed, i had to do the drivers one twice i forgot the insolation first time, then i moved on refurbishing the headlights and fog lamps. I'll like to replace the driver's fog lamp because it's been repair few times but i can't found one now. After all the lights are ready i started fighting them, first wore the headlights then i installed the fog lamps and black trim on the bumper. Then i bumper got fired, i did a bit of adjusting and finally fixed the grill. For a car that spent the last 14 years in a field on a side of a road looks good. I still need to fit the inner fenders cover under the engine and couple more small jobs but for those i'll have to move it to the inspection pit.

I managed to finish everything on this car, i install the inner fenders, plastics under the gearbox check all the bolts, fluids now is ready to go to the inspection station, i'm a bit worried the fuel in the tank is 14 years old it may show high on emissions also the brakes in the back are new but the fronts have about 5mm of rust, only one way to find out.

I prefer the look of the 406 to the 405. It's more stylish to my eye, and having driven one around Europe in 2008, it's quite a nice car. The 405 and 406 were both Peugeot designs for the most part and I'd say the 406 is the high water mark. Pininfarina had a bit to do with both (second gen. 406 only).

Now i have both, 405 and 406, the styling a side they are very different in their driving dynamics. The 405 is more crude the rear suspension is torsion bar and on small bumps not that comfortable but the 405 has lots of body flex that helps on steep inclines. The 406 body is stiff as a rock, if you lift the front at the jacking point, the rear tire come up also. The rear suspension on the 406 is far superior for comfort, i'm not sure about the durability i've heard horror stories about the aluminium trailing arms on the facelift models. That is one of the reason why i chose this exact car steel trailing arms, i do like the facelift look better but body panels especially the front hood is hard to find and very expensive (600 eur) for a used dented one. Also the 2.1dt the XUD11 engine was only available in the pre facelift models. I would never moved of the 605 platform but there is no parts availability. For a daily driver that i put 60-80 000 km a year and get hit in parking lots every few months the obvious choice was a older mehanical diesel.

Agree - the 405 was basically a scaled-up 205 and built super light to the point of being a little scary. I remember racing my 8 year old son to our 405 once on foot and we both hit the car with our hands to end the race and both of us dented it just below the C pillar with a light hand tap.

The rear suspension of the 405 was godawful. I really enjoyed the 406 much more and they look better too. It's a shame they were not sold here because they really were very nice cars.

Lol. I had that happened to me I closed the door by pushing on it and dented it in. The thing is so easy to dent its bonkers. But supposedly it can turn corners very well... I wouldn't know though since mine has only gone around corners on the back of a dolly.

The "409" is registered, insured and ready to be driven. I had some trouble, the previous owner did not give me all the paperwork, had to go after him. But after some expense and lots of headaches its done. I'll have to put wider tires on it its like driving a boat on pavement. Fresh fuel and driving it around did help it drive a bit better, i did park it next to another 406 wagon, that was facelift HDI and my looks to be longer, like the back door and quarter panel was longer. I did not have a tape measure to check and looking online i could not find any mention of the wagons being different sizes perhaps it's the red color that is playing eye ilusion on me.

Last few days i've been working on wheel spacers to be able to fit the OEM Rinjani wheels. I'm running two different spacer sizes and tire sizes but still the same wheel diameter. Next tire change i'm going to get bigger tires the frons are espacily looking small. What are your thoughts?
