TominVegas
Hello all. I am a new member. I have a 1984/1986 505 STI 4 Door Coupe. It is a 84/86 because I had a 1984 but found a wreck 1986 and replaced the front of the crushed 1986 and it's doors with those from a 1984. Saved the newer car, got a 4 speed automatic out of the deal. Anyway. I recently moved to Las Vegas from New Jersey. I have failed the smog test twice now. The current failure is as follows: Idle Speed CO Result: 5.95% Notes: Greater than 1.20% Idle Speed HC 386 PPM Greater than 220 parts per million High Speed HC 250 Greater than 220 PPM I cleaned the filter and replaced the oil in it. Cleaned out all the gunk from inside the rubber connector. I found that there was a torn rubber cap on the rubber connector so I replaced it and zip tied the new one on. (Do not know what that intake on the connector was for.) Looking for advise on what to do to get these emissions down to a level so I can pass and get this car registered. I found this site from Brian Holm from Holm Peugeot where I get my parts. Thanks in advance for any advise you can give me. Regards to all, Tom
SRDT
With that much CO you can't even pass the French test for a 86' car! What kind of injection is fitted in your car? I'm not familliar with US models.
TominVegas
This is a fuel injected engine. Not a carburetor... Is that what your asking?
keebs
When's the last time the o2 sensor was changed? Get some new spark plugs, check for intake/exhaust leaks, adjust the afm if needed. You could also just register it historic and call it a day.
TominVegas
Thanks for the help.. Once you fail smog you have to pass, or wait 90 days. But then you can only drive 5000 per year. I will try your suggestions and see. Thanks again.
SRDT
I was asking if it was a K-Jetronic, KE-Jetronic or LU-Jetronic. In France whe got K-Jet then L-Jet but without any lambda control.
andrethx
I was asking if it was a K-Jetronic, KE-Jetronic or LU-Jetronic. In France whe got K-Jet then L-Jet but without any lambda control. 84 & 86 STI in the US had XN6, so k-jet
TominVegas
Thanks for the assist. I had no idea exactly which type I had. I replaced the plugs in January before I left New Jersey for Las Vegas. Should I have to replace them so soon. It's only been about 3,000 miles since replacement. Ordering O sensor from Brian Holm today.
SRDT
So K-Lambda with minimal electronics like in the Delorean. I think I have some documents about the K-Jet and even the lambda version, it's for Renault PRV but probably useful for troubleshooting. SRDT
So as supposed ignition and air filter are ok high CO on idle can be caused by: Sensor plate and/or plunger not moving freely Check for free movement Cold start valve leaking Check cold start valve "Warm" control pressure too high Test pressure Basic idle setting incorrect Check and adjust CO level Lambda control system not functioning correctly Check Lambda control system
Bean
Sorry - didn't see this post either. Have you checked timing? How does car run? Bg44 or the jetrontic lubroly products are decent over the counter injection cleaners. Aside from that I'd adjust valves, set timing, and make sure cap, rotor, and wires are top notch. You're very close so a complete tune up with a new O2 should pass you. Rabin
themcguire
I am sorry I did not reply that I finally found someone who got the car to pass smog. Cost me 400 but it was worth it. Thanks for all the advise.
