carmaggedon

i don't want to even think about this. the last time they closed the 405 was a couple of months ago when they shut down the freeway for a couple of hours on a saturday while obama was in town. it was a complete nightmare, i went to sleep around 10 or 11 and traffic was still snarled on the major surface street nearest to my house. this is going to be for the whole weekend -- 53 hours.

they've been widening the 405 for years, and finally they've hit the point at which they can't widen it anymore without replacing the overpass bridges that cross it every few miles. this particular overpass bridge is huge, it's 85 feet high so it's taking them two days to replace it. it's part of the famous mulholland drive of movie and street-racing fame. the bridge was in the news a few years ago when a tagger fell from it after spray-painting his name on it -- he fell all 85 feet. dude lived...

probably a good time to get out of town...

maybe. or santa barbara. might just stay home and hang out in the backyard, since i'll be studying. <_<

by the way, speaking of san diego, i saw in one of the other threads that you'll be in la jolla when you go to school -- la jolla is awesome. i can't think of many things better than being in college and living in la jolla, you should have a great time. :D

there's a few urth cafés around here -- i live in the shadow of century city in west LA, so i'm midway between the one in beverly hills and the one in santa monica. not a big fan of BH (though it's good for people/car watching), so the SM is probably a good choice. i think there might be one in venice (not listed on the website), but parking is terrible in venice so SM is about as edgy as i get these days. :D just let me know when you are around.

more carmaggedon news. in addition to the businesses mentioned in the article, others are attempting to cash in on the event...many local resorts, spas and casinos are offering "carmaggedon getaway packages."

as for myself, i'm staying home & studying, hanging out in the backyard, workin' on my car, etc. i refuse to drive next weekend.

We got our own version of Carmageddon comin here soon. Mayor McGinn (Nicknamed McSchwinn as he's an anti-car bicyclist lawyer) wants to tear down the Alaska Way Vaiduct. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaskan_Way_Viaduct

It carries a significant amount of traffic through the center of Seattle's downtown hour-glass shaped core. And replace it with nothing (surface streets). Seattle's political culture has borrowed the worst aspects of CA trends and blended it with it's own pointy-headed ideas. They tried to build a monorail to solve transportation issues. (I'm not making this up!) It was a huge FAIL before one meter of golden rail was laid. But environmental lawyers, planners and probably channelers were paid during the years they were pulling emimant domain, shutting down businesses and doing other important work.

They don't have the will to do anything, except make "traffic calming" devices. Which is probably a good idea because their ideas suck so bad.

We're screwed.

yes, i wouldn't say LA traffic is any worse than Seattle, or Washington DC, or a bunch of other places...it's just that we have so much more of it.

so carmageddon is turning out to be like y2k, an anticlimax. everybody either left town or is staying in their homes. the westside (where i live) is like a ghost town, except for the million news helicopters flying around. for more info on what the fuss is all about, here's a slideshow of the work that is causing the shutdown, 'cause i know everyone loves to click through a million pictures. :)

this work is being done as part of the US government's economic stimulus plan, the part that deals with infrastructure construction/repair. no political discussions please, let's keep our arguments peugeot-focused. :D

Infrastrure construction/repair is my line of work :)

I'm one of the first individuals certified by the American Public Works Association

I've done bridge inspection, maybe I should come down and micro manage their inspectors? No thanks, I've got enough failing infrastructure around here to keep an eye on. OK I'm done highjacking, now back to the coming soon to LA!
