ahing6
The pinion The kit came with 2 seals 4 square ring (nylon/teflon)? bushings and 1 O-ring. Used electrical tape to protect from sharp edges which soon found out was not necessary, they are tough! Besides being a bit of pain to get rings over to respective grooves they bloody well stretch out ! At 1st i used warm water thinking will soften ease over...nope...made sense cause it will be in HOT fluid. Thought i destroyed it after really shoe horning it over the spool, trust me there's no other DIY way. So i came up with this idea I have access to a steam blaster which i used to heat up hose clamp and wrapping spool in towel to keep heat. Change position of clamp to keep consistent shape of nylon ring. U can see other 2 rings are back down to size in grooves. A hair dryer or wisely used heat gun will also work. New seal and bearing showing line of how deep to re-position bearing. retainer clips bottom & top New pressed in seal There is an O-ring of which i have no idea where goes. Had none when disassembled pinion spool. So just installed the washer. There' no final retainer clip....it's all held in place with crimped punched edges. Being a jeweller by trade I have just the right special tool for this. Special tool.....an old square file...lol. All punched crimped down To be continued...... ahing6
Passing rack from left side is easier less fuel,PS line clutter etc. (RHD) re-attaching one of lines, was just that lil much to pass through sub frame area. (not originals) All bolted down, the heat shield was positioned later. So far it has been 2 weeks since car is back on road....no leaks

Bean
I missed this - Very nice repair thread Ahing6! It would be nice to source a similar kit for 505's as well as repair sleeves for grooved housings which is supposed to be what prevents rebuilding the alloy housing pinions. How were the housings on the 405? Rabin
ahing6
Nice job :-) I need oil seal for steering ram. Umm i think when it comes to the ram you have to replace it. It's non serviceable ...no access to internals. Sometimes the metal lines will have very fine hard to see crack. My last line had crack on the dome flare which was impossible to see from outside. I opted to custom make lines from softer alloy tubing rather than original rigid steel which has less flex to vibration etc.

Rabin Here is link where I ordered pinion seal kit from in England http://steeringseals.com/kits.html?manufacturer=9&p=2 There was another in Australia but the shipping would cost more than kit. The housing was in good shape...just usual internal marks would expect from square teflon ring bushings on a 15yr old part. My 1st 505 had top pinion seal leak which i just pried out and replaced with a generic one. That pinion is now on my current 505/SR20 with no leaks. The ram has slight leak however though. Will be hitting up Tommy for another one sometime unless i can get new one. Jeez when will the spending ever stop.....
