Rebuilding the 4HP22 auto

With my recent acquisition of parts that came with the Dani engine - I've now got 3 4HP22's in the garage. One is known good out of an 88' GLX that has the N9TE bellhousing on it, and the other two are the ones that I just got. 1 is unknown, and the other is known to be bad.

I did some quick googling and the repair / rebuild kits for these are only ~$200 for factory ZF kits, and I've found lots of references from the other car makes (Volvo, BMW, Range Rover etc etc) that tell of guys rebuilding them with great success.

Since I've got three of the damn things, I figured I should give it a try - but I first wanted to see if anyone else has had any experience with them. My 86 TD wagon has a 4HP22, so I figured I could rebuild one of the known bad ones as a spare, and if that goes well - offer to rebuild one of the others to sell. Tough part is I'd have to install it to test it, but I might do that with the wagon since I didn't think it was shifting as it should.

I also found kits to firm up shifting, and I remember John (the505inme) talking about a mod to lower the converter loc up speed. So it sounds like they could be made quite stout for not a whole lot of money.

i haven't rebuilt a transmission lately (or ever :) ), but i did get a zf manual for my car's transmission recently, mostly to learn more about it. more and more, i'm finding that the part of my car that most needs upgrading is the owner.

i figure when the time comes, i'll probably have my transmission rebuild by somebody like these guys. interestingly, on their website they talk about addressing design flaws in the 4hp22 during the rebuild process. thought you'd like to see this info if you haven't already seen it, lots of good transmission-rebuild-porn shots... :)

Rabin, if you find yourself selling one of these transmissions, I'd be interested in getting my 82 2.3 TD upgraded. George at sunset coachmen did an upgrade years ago with something similar on a 604 with the 2.3 TD and mating the 4HP22 to it with great results!

I had a 86 2.5 TD with the 4HP22 before and loved it!

I'd be happy too Jeff - but the problem is with the bellhousing, flywheel and torque converter you'd need for the diesel engine. All three autos I have for spares are for N9TEx's.

I jumped at the chance to own the 86' 505 TD wagon when it came up. I knew it was a one year only offering, and I really wanted the Xd3T mated to the 4-sp so that highway travel was relaxed. Trip back at 110 KPH confirmed it was definitely the right choice! Been doing some research on tuning it, and some injector pump tuning and a modern turbo should really modern it up quite nicely.

Rabin, your right about the addition change in other parts. XD2 & 3 flywheels are the same 82-86 years from what I remember as well as the starters. I had a an 81 model year XD2S one time and found out the differences between the 81-82 model years when I did a 82 motor trans plant!

I can get a flex plate & torgue converter. The big issue is finding a bell housing for the 4HP22 to mate to the diesel. Europe is likely where I'll find one.

The end result is just like you expressed, relaxed highway driving!

I miss that feature from my 86 :(

I have an 86 505 Turbo wagon and the XD2S and 3 speed from a 1982 604.      ( George at sunset coachmen?)

Can the XD2S be made to play nice with the 86 4 speed auto? If so, with what parts. (If CA won't register the car, it would become a LeMons racer.)

Or can the XD2S be installed in an 84 505 SW 3 speed auto with normally aspirated gas engine? With what parts and what difficulty.

Hi Joe,

My 86 505 TD 4sp wagon will hopefully be 5sp swapped before April, so if your XD2S has the same crank as the XD3T then I will have everything you need to attach it to your XD2S.

XD3T was the only diesel engine to come with the 4sp auto in North America, and it was only offered for one year (1986) before Peugeot stopped selling diesels in North America -  so best option is to find an 86 TD auto wagon - but if you've done that there's no real reason to swap unless it's trashed.

Thank you for the info.

I had no problem registering and titling my TDI converted 88 Vanagon, no BAR, no Referee, no verification, no inspection.......I just told the DMV clerk that it is now a diesel. This is the 3rd TDI vanagon conversion that I know 1st hand that has been registered in this no hassle way . On the XD2S - it was installed in 505s through 85, maybe early 86, so for sure CA will register an XD2S in an 84 originally gas vehicle, maybe in an 86. And if CaliforniTrump refuses to register it.......hello Lemons racing

.I am more fearful of engine/transmission/chassis incompatibility   My question was really about what will mate to what and fit into what and with what additional parts and modifications........thanks.............JoE
