  1. $400 ain't too bad. What symptoms do you have? what are your goals for the car? How long do you plan on keeping it? Lastly, what's your car background/experience?
  2. I dont have my manual handy at the moment, IIRC it is a bad or missing signal. In my non-professional opinion, 9 out of 10 AFM replacements are unnecessary. They're pretty robust units and unless someone has opened it up and ordained it a ghetto "fix" all you need to do is properly chean the connectors. Get yourself a can of CRC QD Electrical cleaner, clean the hell out of it, then get some diaelectric grease, apply, and reconnect the AFM. Do this on every connecxtor that looks ratty. Works.
  3. How yould you know? I thought that TTY bolts were usually torqued down using the "angle method". Isn't that how ours go? That led me to think they WERE TTY bolts. That being said, I've never seen anybody declare them TTY or seek to replace them.
  4. I vote Dumbass. M-B bled for Chrysler when they had a market for their big iron. With the recession and people still skittish about potential $4+ gas coming back, Government mandates, 55% union control, they're worse than toxic. They're certain death for any "partner" (read "chump"). Other than a slice of their dealer network, Chrysler offers nothing for FIAT except a financial black hole. I'd LOVE to see hot Italian cars come back, but this just ain't gonna happen. If they want a dealer network, buy it from Chapter 11/7. Or buy Mitsubishi N/A. But this?! What say you?
  5. Yup, nothing new in the Peugeot world. But I'm taking care of you guys! Very interesting reading. What they think of the cars, what's important to them, etc. clicky
  6. Outstanding work Christophe! A little bit of information is lacking: What is the OEM application for "CoupeA-A"? Did you have the discs redrilled to the 505 ABS requirements? Thanks again for your diligent work on this. Koll
  7. I'd like to stay in the $6-10K range. That eliminates any real new cars. Most likely cars of 00 vintage or so. My friend is a Subaru owner and roached his 99 2.5's headgasket. I hear they went through three generation of headgasket types to finally solve the problem. Heard this happened in 03(?). So, although the newer cars are probably great, they're too spendy at the moment. Lexus is out - they recommend "no towing" with the car. Lame. Reading of a lot of quality issues with the Volvos. Especially the V40. I'll have to look at the V70, but it looks big. If we go big, I'd just as soon opt for the Previa AllTrac supercharged. Still leaning towards the 2.8 A4 Avant. You find anything yet Evan?
  8. When I was a new Peugeot owner, he sold me 4 manuals which were very poor photocopies. I would feel embarrassed to even give them away and expect someone to use them effectively. I paid full price.
  9. What is the "R"? Looking for something "not big". Wife will be driving it. Hence the initial pull towards the A4. If the V70 big? I also see the V40 introduced in 2000. Any good? I was thinking of the 9-3 or 9-5, but I'm reading that they have a lot of relibility issues. Ideally, I'd like to get her a IS300 SportCross, but those are still $10K+. Something dead-reliable, safe, comfortable, well made, that can make trips to Home Depot when needed. (Sorry to hi-jack the thread). On original thread... I'd opt for the M-B, but diesels require a certain zen to maintain. The 7 series can cost an arm and leg when they go sideways. I'd opt for a 5 series. If fact, a 5 series wagon is on our list as well.
  10. Ya, I'm thinking of getting a wagon. Would love a Peugeot, but the situation demand that this car be "more modern" (ABS, etc.). I'm leaning towards the A4 2.8 wagon. (late 90s, early 00s). I've heard the A6 Avant is a POS in terms of reliability. Is the 2.8 in the old A6 Avants the same engine that's in the A4?
  11. http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/1027905059.html Anybody got any experience with these?
  12. Perhaps longer lasting, but not more reliable. I've never heard of a belt going unless it's many miles past it's change-out perior. They it also rob power and are noisy. I've messed with both and actually prefer belts.
  13. That has always been a dream of mine I to design my own cylinder head. I'm watching some real hopeful developments in the 3D printer space. Removing stereo lithography from the cost equasion leaves mold making and casting as the unknown expense items. I'd figure a cost of 2-3K. The real cool thing is you could source the rocker and valves from a modern car! Anybody know why the N9T uses a chain instead of a belt to drive the cam?
  14. You did NOT let some kid hammer on an old engine stone cold in these temps?! Radiator hissing? Why haven't you found out what's causing it? Your daily driver? I don't want to sound unencouraging, but Peugeot ownership might not be the best fit for your expectations in a car. Meh, it's only metal. Not like I haven't seen this movie.
  15. Although we appreciate people advancing motorsports and the like, this might be considered a little spammy. We'll see what some others think as it has little (actually nothing) to do with Peugeots. Any backup on your first post Rezmoto?
  16. Not sure how they do things up in CA, but down here, just about any "driver" has a valuation of about $2K. After deductable, you're looking at them cutting you a check for $600-1K. Do they actually prosecute such crimes? Down here, they view auto theft/vandalism/etc slightly below jaywalking and save the real police work for things like sensitivity training.
  17. I am in. I'm going to be rebuilding a N9T motor this summer. Kindda curious about the "re-torque procedure" which the general consus is a cannard method and if it would be required after good fastners like ARP studs. I was shocked that such a POS procedure was actually spelled out in the factory manual. I'll do it if I have to, but everything about it screams wrong wrong wrong.
  18. Man, that's just jacked. No good advice to give. I'd say you're looking at a couple of grand to fix that. Keep an eye out for another 505. Luckily, there are a few for sale around here locally. You've got the 85 and an 86+ would be better with the new interior and intercooler pushing out more HP. Hopefully, you'll get some insurance money and get to strip everything of value from the current car. This is what happens when you don't instill a sense of honor & integrity into your young! Of course, it could be an old loser that did this - there are more than enough of those to go around too. Sorry for your loss.
  19. I'll try to take this information to a friend I know (in Seattle) and maybe he would buy it. He was talking that he would like such a car (5sp turbo). Does this car have ABS brakes? Thanks and thanks for serving!
  20. Although the "big 3" probably agreed to it, it was M-B that successfully lobbied for the draconian import restrictions we have in this country today. Maybe that'll all change on the 20th?!
  21. http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/ctd/977567727.html Looks like a stripper with manual rear windows. *Arguably* the best car to get. But, has 87+ alloys.
  22. Problem is, the N9T is a harder car to to do up than a STI. If he's coming up empty with a regular XN6 car, then a N9T is gonna kick his ass.
  23. You've also got to be able go against what the pros say. I just got back from an old-school "brake wizard". He disassembles and R&Rs calipers for all cars. He wouldn't do disassemble the inner piston of a MKIV Girling (rears - all 505 disc) saying "they have special tools at the factory", "I COULD get it apart, but it'd never go back together", "too much spring pressure - unsafe", blah, blah, blah. Screw him. I'll do it myself or die trying. It WILL get done and it looks like I'm gonna do it. You have to think like that to be a Peugeot owner. You'll run across this time and time again. It'll get to the point where the only thing they can do on their car is so simple, your girlfriend/wife could do the same thing with instructions over the phone. It's very to exceed the economical viability of professionals. Whether it's computers, home repair or cars. Sure, they all say they "can fix any car". It guess the operative word is "can". They don't say they "will".
  24. Because he knows the cars will cost a lot to fix in the future. Parts are drying up and it'll take real money to keep them running in the future. Most Peugeot owners are not known for laying down big bucks on their rides. A M-B owner won't think twice about paying 3K for a tranny rebuild. For a Peugeot owner, this is usually a ticket to therapy. The short and raw of it is Peugeot owners are cheapskates. They want BMW beating cars at Geo prices. For mechanics that are too nice to tell someone to get lost, this presents problems. They have to pay their bills every month with real money. Peugeots don't cut it. Hondas and Toyotas do. I know of only ONE guy who is a "wallet" Peugeot owner. The rest of us either wrench on our own cars or exist on the mercy of the few mechanics that know how to work on them. That's the landscape as it is.
  25. We have about a foot from the three days. And it's sticking around. Most intense snow in memory - and I'm old! It's been over 20 years since we had anything like this. Is there anything Global Warming can't do? People rag on our asses about being pansies in the snow. Sure, maybe. But I've seen very few cars inop during this last week. It doesn't make fiscal sense to "be prepared" for winter driving. You'll probably sell the car before you'll ever get a chance to use them. And we have HILLS here. I lived in Chicago and the wife is from Detroit and they don't even have small grades. Most midwesterners would call what we have here mountains. Seattle has a grand total of 21 plows. I might get a set of these awesome snows for the 86, but not the 87. It was the first year of ABS and didn't have the LSD or Torsen. Maybe I should swap out a diff sometime down the road.
