august
Looks like they are trying to sell this car again, however I think the asking price is ridiculously high. Car was factory-sponsored in 1986 and 1987, and raced by Janet Guthrie, Woodner, Farrell, and Steve Potter. This is one of two cars built to identical specifications, using pre-production cars with STI-spec drivetrains, but with Taxi interiors, and special VIN numbers. This car was raced in SCCA Escort, and IMSA Firehawk. Car was sold to Arlo Cota, who raced it in IMSA for several years. Mr. Cota still owns the other team car, using it for hill climbs. Car was sold to the owner of Moto-Delta in Chicage, who raced it for a couple of seasons. It then went to another owner, who Vintage raced it for several seasons. Car runs well, is very powerful, with ECM controlling boost to levels "higher than stock". Engine was freshened by the last owner, and seems to be strong. There is minor smoking at idle, that seems to go away at speed. Boost gauge not working, but boost is! Paint is fair, but decals are faded, and the car could stand to be refurbished cosmetically. The only rust on the car is shown in the photo of the left rear door. 39,000 miles. E-mail for more info, history, and photos of the car in action. Johnny
Nice pics! Interresting auction.... Why is it advertised as a STI when it has an turbo-engine?? It looks like like an N9TEA (TPS + they say that boost is controlled by ECM).
Bean
Wow - with the better pictures it sure is rough... To rough for the money he's asking. It's got some racing provinance, but no where near as much as Red... Car needs another whack of cash to get it up to spec so it just wouldn't be worth it... Hope it goes to a good home though - as it would be nice to see it race again. Rabin
norcal505
god i love that car. dont digg the shape its in though. needs some work on the rust, and racing graphics. and i dont really digg the rims...i think that they would look better painted or in black-not gunmetal. thanks august

It looks like like an N9TEA (TPS + they say that boost is controlled by ECM). that's the normal US spec TPS that's on all the N9TE + N9TEA's over here. I think the 85 N9T might have the 'less' adjustable black bosch unit. not sure though, i forget
Johnny
Huh? The two N9TE-engines I've looked at both had the black box switch-type tps, and not the microswitch-potentiometer combination on the pictures (and on my -88 N9TEA). I've never seen the bosch microswitch + tps enclosed box on a turbo in the US (except maybe for the 85, but i'm not sure).
Johnny
Ok, I didn't know that... maybe the engines I've looked at was from -85 or there's a difference between the us- and euro-spec cars. I don't know exatly what year the engines were from, I just assumed that they were N9TE.
august
i think it's a difference with the US spec cars. maybe it has to do with engine managment, as US = LU-Jetronic whereas europe spec was L-Jet?
Victor
Interesting car but it never raced as an SCCA SSB car (like Red) for they're not (supposed to be) prepared by anybody. In fact, I know that's not the car that Peter Ferrell was disqualified in at the '88 Runnoffs (over boosted). The fact that it has a fuel cell as an example. I watched that car at Riverside during a Firehawk race. It cornered very flat and smoked the tire all the way around turn 6 with Bill Pavone (Motorsports Manager) driving. Also note the vin number., Red's is 405076 so that would make it 4976 cars before Red. The engine that's in it now looks very stock. I seem to remember that the "peanut head" engine had a different valve cover, too. I notice that there is a piece of cruise control mechanism still on the throttle (I think, anyway). The '85's dipstick comes up in a different place so this is '86+ It is, however, inspiration to get Red back into battle.
Peugeottogo
So to summerize this car: No historical significance? Someone's dream SCCA 505? Transplanted stock engine? 1984-85 front doors? I thought that the GL versions were used for the racing plateform due to the addional weight of electric motors, sunroof, etc. $1,500.00 or obo. sounds about right. It only reached $650.00 2 years ago on ebay before the auction was pulled. Jeff
august
i would be really curious to hear more about the engine. i think one of the owners of that car was on the forum for a while.. hmmmm also interesting about the handling characteristics victor, it'd be great to have some pictures underneath the car! clearly, the top of the front struts show it's not stock. SSB
clearly, the top of the front struts show it's not stock. You noticed that too? Yet I have seen them before like that (but I don't remember just where ). I wonder if "The Great New York City Taxi Cab Experiment" actually was a different chassis. They were all diesels back in '84 that were given to the Taxi companies to promote that car (apparently it didn't work). I've been told that a couple of those Taxi Cabs are still in service! Mow many millions of miles would that be? There were also some '85's Turbos that were used by Sunshine Car Rentals in Los Angeles. My friend bought one but I don't recall it being any different than any other '85.
