  7. I think it could be bad news, but the good news is that Peugeot was a wallflower at the Prom and its biological clock was at 3 seconds to midnight (OK so I am not a good creative writer!)...... is it better to have some sort of partnership than it would be to totally run out of cash in early 2013? I think so, short-term. The pullout from Les Vingt-Quatre Heures Du Mans was the wake-up call for me, I thought PSA was doing relatively OK until that happened. It reminded me of the retreat from North America. Which - I am convinced - is part of their problem even now; not selling luxury and sporty cars here with RWD platforms with a measure of success from 1991-2011 is what has led to their present dilemma. It is interesting to read PSA's own spokepeople saying that they need to "move upmarket", yeah like DUH, that's what many of us have been saying for decades. You can't make cheap econoboxes in France cheaply enough to compete with the Asian competition, so they ought to have done what VAG did, exactly. Make your Audis in the home country, some upmarket VWs too, make the cheap stuff in Mexico etc.....even Daimler has that one figured out.

  10. Agreed, there must have been some white knuckles around the Board table at 75 Avenue de la Grande Armée when they decided to pull the plug on the 908 program two days ago, having just received several 2012 spec tubs from Germany, making new parts for the 2012 model starting 4 weeks ago and being in Florida already for testing. You just don't do that sort of thing mid-stream unless there is a breathless panic at the highest levels in the corporation. I think this ranks right up there with the departure from North America as a betrayal for the enthusiasts. Jean Todt was asked to comment on this and he said that it's best to strengthen committments to programs like this when times are tough. This is exactly what happened when Peugeot began the 205 T16 program the last time they were a millimetre from going tits up. Peugeot is in deep trouble again, and this decision just made it worse. I figure in a few years they will be an arm of a larger corporation from another country.

  18. I think that PSA thought they could get away with a presence in the eastern economies only, that had up until recently great growth rates, so anyone present in those markets was making tons of money. But as the Asian markets become more competitive, and the car buyers become more sophisticated and attuned to matters like brand image, PSA's models will be squeezed out, just as they were from North America more than 20 years ago. Their best cars are the cheap ones and they still can't make a decent luxury car. So in short, I think that PSA may be realising (too late?) that they should have remained in North America, and should not have abandoned a RWD platform for their more expensive cars. The USA is where so much of the global reputation for car quality and brand perception (right or wrong) originates. They faced a similar problem back in the sixties: remain a low volume brand like SAAB or Volvo and be swallowed up by others (or disappear) or become a volume car maker. They chose the latter. I think that around now, they have some more soul-searching to do. Their home market is in a bad condition, Europe is duff, the emerging markets they were counting on to remain somewhat profitable are getting tougher to compete against the likes of Audi BMW and M-B in, so maybe they will finally have to become a truly international brand, with a presence here. Twenty years ago I thought that they would never come back but now I think there is a 50% chance they will be back in one form or another in the next ten years, unless their financial situation is so dire that they end up as a large SAAB-type case.

  22. And the seller "generously" offered to get me to phone the actual owner....not worth the cost! That and the photos make it look as genuine as a $3 bill.
  23. It doesn;t look much like a 1961 from the photos, I have asked the seller for a VIN to check the age.
