  1. NJ doesn't have early voting the way many states do. It used to be that in order to vote absentee you needed to give an excuse. They eliminated that so now anyone can do an absentee ballot without giving a reason. A few days ago the governor issued an executive order that anyone displaced by the storm could request an absentee ballot by fax or email and return it by fax or email. In addition, anyone could go in person to the county clerk's office and do an absentee ballot this weekend. Our heat is gas fired central boiler for the building. The building management has brought in portable generators to provide power for the heat and hot water. There are 15 buildings in the complex, two of which are uninhabitable due to the flooding. I think they got those generators on Wednesday. Since then we have had heat and hot water part of each day. Last night they ran them all night until they ran out of gas. The one powering our boiler room ran out at 5:30AM and was out for the rest of the day. They got a couple of hundred gallons of gasoline this afternoon and restarted our heat and hot water about 7:00PM. Tonight is going to be the coldest night since the storm. We may have snow tomorrow, but probably not this close to the coast.
  2. Today I have to find a Laundromat that has power. We've been off for 8 days now. Wednesday we are expecting another storm. There is a possibility of snow with this one, though I think it will be mostly rain on the coast by me, but they are talking about 70mph gusts from the north east which would bring the water back in. This may be the last straw for some of the beech front houses that are teetering on the edge now. I was worried about voting today. About 10 or 15 districts in my town had their polling places relocated to city hall because of storm damage. Some of them were actually damaged others were in schools or other buildings that are being used as shelters. Mine was a fire house that has been the main distribution point for relief supplies so they added us to the list. I figured it would be a zoo, but while the building was elbow to elbow with people, once I found my district's location, there was no wait. There seemed to be a steady stream of people but they were taking us pretty much as we came.
  3. Today I went on an electricity run. We still have no power. I've been running cell phones, iPad, laptops internet access and VOIP phone system on a car battery and a stash of rechargeable AA batteries. By now after a week without power there were somethings like the toothbrush and the rechargeable batteries, that needed a real charge so we went to visit the Granddaughter and family in NY and I plugged in and got everything charged up. Coming home we saw some nearby neighborhoods with power for the first time so we have hope that we may not be that much longer, but it's still cold and dark here. Still we could be a lot worse. At least we stayed above water. There are power crews from across the country working to get power back on. I don't know if it will be another day or another week. Oh and the gas lines have been horrendous but yesterday I found a station that had run out of gasoline so there was no line. I inquired if they still had diesel and they did, so I was able to fill up with no wait.
  4. We were under mandatory ecacuation. We got home a couple of hours ago. No power. No heat. No cell service. Water came about 8" shy of the door but didn't come in. We have 4 steps up to the front door and the water line is 1 and a half steps from the top. People who left their cars behind us were up to the door handles. A block away cars were over their roofs. We took my wife's Honda and parked it in a parking lot on high ground. I pushed the blue 505 to the highest part of our parking lot and when we evacuated we took the gray 505 stuffed to the gills with photo albums and a traumatized cat. The water looks like it came up to just about the bottom of the doors on the blue 505 the carpet is wet and a little water on the floor in the back but no sign of anything higher than that. I have an uninterruptible power supply running my DSL modem, a router and my Vonage devices. I'm using a car battery to charge cell phones, this iPad, and a LED work light. The cell phones don't really matter for now as there is no service, but eventually I guess that will come back. Tomorrow I'll fire up the camping stove and cook up some hot food. We just had cold cuts for dinner. I guess I'll turn off the UPS in a little bit and go to bed.
  5. I live in Long Branch NJ. I am about a mile inland from the Ocean but I'm right on the water on the bay side. I have received the following message: Updated Sunday, October 27, 2012, 08:00PM State of Emergency is now in effect in the City of Long Branch. If you are a visitor to the New Jersey Shore, make other arrangements over the next 12 hours to move outside the County. If you know someone planning to visit Long Branch please advise them not to do so. All Long Branch residents living along the coast and flood prone areas should prepare to relocate outside the area with family and friends. Voluntary evacuations are strongly encouraged at this time. I'm going to try and push the blue 505 with no engine up to a little higher ground in the morning. If need be, I'll move the grey "crusty" one and the Honda under their own power, but I've got to do what I can with the blue one before the serious stuff hits. In the nor'easter of 91, about which the movie The Perfect Storm was made, the water did get up in the lower end of the parking lot. It didn't make it quite to my door and didn't get high enough to cause a problem for the blue car where it is now, but it was close enough that if this gets a little higher than that storm, I would have a problem. I've also gone through Hurricanes Gloria and Irene in this location but the water didn't get as high in either of those as it did in 91. The latest models show it just about over me Monday night or early Tuesday. In the morning I've got to go to my storage unit and get my camping stove. I'll get some kitty liter on the way back as we'll probably have to keep the cat in for 24 hours or so, and if we have to evacuate, we'll need to set up a litter box for him where ever we go. For Irene last year we were in a mandatory evacuation zone so we found a Hotel about 60 miles inland that accepted pets. We would have been better off staying home for Irene, but we aren't making any decisions yet about this one except to be ready to do whatever we decide. I've got most of the batteries I might need but I may try to get a few more D cells. I should be OK with a storm surge up to nearly 10 ft. Over that and I'm in trouble.
  6. So they did cancel the streaming video, which didn't make the Office of Tibet, or me, very happy. They did give me a pair of comp tickets to the event so my wife and I did get to hear the Dalai Lama's teaching. This is a picture someone else took of the people gathered outside, where they set up speakers so the overflow crowd could hear it. It gives some idea that there would have been a lot of people around the world who would have wanted to watch the live streaming video if I had been allowed to do it.
  7. It looks like it says CFCs HCFCs series substitution.
  8. You call that simple? My first car was a 1970 Beatle. I could change the engine by the side of the road with a hand full of tools. It eventually rotted into a pile of dust but if it wasn't for the body rust, I'm sure it would still be going today.
  9. The battery/charge light comes on with the key on and engine off and has never come on with the engine running. Most of the time I believe all is working normally. I wonder if there is some kind of intermittent short, and maybe that's what killed the first alternator. This alternator is clearly working properly most of the time.
  10. I've been otherwise occupied so I haven't done much with the cars. A couple of weeks ago I came out in the morning and found that I had left a work light plugged into the lighter socket and the battery was dead. I put a charger on it for a while, started it and went off on the errand I was originally headed on. When I got where I was going, about 5 miles away, I was going to leave it running, but I got a phone call and without thinking, I shut it off to hear better. I then foudn that the battery was dead again. Although I did get a bit of a click, I couldn't roll up the windows or get it to turn over at all. There was an auto parts store across the street so I walked over and purchased one of those jump starter things that I guess have something like a lawn mower battery in them. I wasn't sure it would start a diesel even if I took it home and charged it overnight, but I figured it was worth a try. Right off the shelf I was able to start it and get home. I swapped the battery out of the blue car and used that for a couple of days when I came out one morning and found that dead. I started it with my new jumper and drove about 10 miles. When I came out about 20 minutes It wouldn't start without the jumper. When I got home and shut it off, It started easily. I put a charger on it over night and had no more trouble for several days. One morning I came out to a nearly dead battery again. I drove it for about an hour and have now not had any trouble for about 4 days now. So the first time I assumed I had run down the battery with the work light, but that doesn't explain how it got deader after driving 5 miles and why it periodically goes dead again. When it goes dead it doesn't seem to initial take any charge from the alternator and then at some point it kicks back in and starts charging again. It seems like there is some kind of intermittent short. I know Joe recently replaced the alternator before I got it. Since it's happened with two different batteries I don't think it's the battery. I wonder if what I'm experiencing was the cause of his problem as well. There are no apparently poor connections between the battery, alternator, and/or starter. I'm pretty sure whatever it is, is intermittent.
  11. Well I've spent most of the last week on a project completely unrelated to the Peugeots. My wife is a Tibetan Buddhist, of Mongolian heritage and we are both on the board of the Temple and several foundations relating to her culture. In about 10 days, another organization related to her heritage is hosting The Dalai Lama at Lincoln Center in NYC. We have been involved in hosting some of his previous visits which is a really big deal, so I volunteered some of my experience to help. I specifically volunteered to do the live streaming video, which is one of the requirements that the office of Tibet has. Having done that before for the Dalai Lama, I explained nearly a year ago what provisions they would need to have in their contract with the venue. Apparently they did no such thing. When I went to a production meeting on Friday, that was the first anyone from Lincoln Center had heard about any filming or broadcast. They called in the Lawyers and now I'm not sure if this is going to come off. The Venue wants over $10,000 to release the broadcast rights, which was not in the budget, and I'm sitting here 10 days out, after spending weeks of my time, and I don't know if I'll be doing it, and if I do, I don't know where I'll be located, relative to the cameras, so I don't know what cables, adapters, or converters I'm going to need. How this group got into such a big league event is beyond me. So I just needed to vent a little.
  12. There's a section for technical resources at: http://www.505turbo.com/forum/index.php?/forum/2-technical-resources/ Some of what you are looking for may be there already, and maybe you can encourage people to add more stuff there.
  13. Some would say "Freedom Fighter"
  14. So is this the same "Nevada" filter used in my Diesels? It's a little harder to find them with the grid and the rubber lip, but I've gotten the foam replacement part from several sources without too much trouble. examples: Wix Part # 46199 Beck Arnley 042-1502
  15. My wife has dental insurance both through her company and through me, so for most things her's pays part, and mine picks up the rest, but neither touches touches implants. She has two of those in the works and there wasn't enough bone below the sinus so they had to do a sinus lift first, where they graft bone to boost up the bottom of the sinus. Then after that has about 9 months to mend, they start on the usual implant procedures, so overall this will take more than 2 years and more money than I want to think about.
  16. Then that does make sense. That's just how the two rides feel to me.
  17. For the blue car Michelin says it originally took 175SR14 The door sticker says 185/70R-14s which is what is on it The Grey one has 195/60R-15 which agrees with the door sticker. Michelin says it originally took190/65HR390. The door stickers on both cars look the same and are in the same place. They both list the 14 and 15 inch wheels. Could those stickers be something that the dealer would have put on later in the life of both cars listing the modern tire sizes? Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference 185/70-14 5.1in 12.1in 24.2in 76.0in 834 0.0% 195/60-15 4.6in 12.1in 24.2in 76.1in 833 0.1% So I guess one less rotation per mile isn't going to be detectable.
  18. Well maybe if it catches fire and you have to get out through the sun roof.
  19. Boy then I would be sleeping in it. I've got the roof rack on the Blue car, so that's easy enough to move over.
  20. If I put those wheels on the blue car, aren't I going to mess with the gear ratio and the speedometer, or are the tires the same diameter?
  21. Now that I've got two 1985 TDs, and I think I'll be driving the Grey one for a while as I work on the blue one, I guess this calls for a separate build thread.

    RockAuto Sucks

I've also had a high percentage of wrong items from Rock Auto but I've always been able to return them without question. I haven't, however, ordered anything with the little euro flag. I was tempted by a clutch kit once, but I called them first to get clarification on the difference between two that they offered, and they couldn't give me any more information. They told me I would be welcome to order both and return the one that wasn't right, but since they were in Europe, the shipping would be on me. I didn't give another thought to getting it from them. I paid a little more to get it elsewhere but I got the right parts. Usually I look at their manufacturer's part number and try to verify the application elsewhere rather than just trust their listing. I got a caliper from them once that leaked badly on installation. They didn't have another of that brand or any other to fit. They were fine with my returning it for a refund but I needed to locate another first, or drive around with no brake. So I drove it for a couple of weeks with their leaky caliper, got their permission to try a rebuild kit, found the inside was badly scored, and used it for another week or two until I found another one elsewhere. I then returned the, by now, well used caliper and got a full refund. This was a name brand rebuilt caliper so I can't blame RockAuto that it was defective, and other than failure to have more of them in stock, they couldn't have handled that any better.
  23. That's me. I used to get compared to Gary Busey all the time but not so much any more. I don't know if I look less like him than I used to, or he's not in the public eye as much lately. Hopefully I don't look like some of the recent photos of him, even after my all night bus ride. For a long time, a day never went by that someone didn't ask if I was Gary Busey but now maybe once or twice a year. ...........Dave............................Gary............
  24. I think my original rides smoother. Remember I did what I thought needed doing to my car's suspension a few months ago with new parts. Although I haven't decided for sure, I think I may drive the grey car for the winter and let it be the one to suffer the salt, and then do the engine swap in the spring. Meanwhile I can get what's left of the hydrolocked engine out and do a few projects that would be hard to do on a daily driver. For instance I might take out some of the glass to address rust before it gets more serious. Then when I put the engine in the blue car, it can be ready to go.
