ptootsov
I'm working on the '87 505 STX I got from my mother that has a belt squeal when it's cold. The belt in question appears to be the one connected to the alternator. The belt itself looks in good shape, and had been replaced. Even after replacement the squeal was there. I up for replacing it again if it helps, but thought I seek advice here. Any ideas? Thanks, Peeter '87 505 STX 73K miles
Bean
Hi Peeter, If the belt is in good shape (not glazed up), and belt tension is good, you might actually have a bad bearing in the alternator which can sometimes make a horrible screeching - very similar to a slipping belt. If you pull the belt you can wrap the pulley with a cord, then give it a pull to see if the alternator spinning alone makes the noise. You can also use your hand to see how nicely it turns. As a rule - I always replace all the belts at the same time. Rabin
