Dutch 505

Hello everybody,

As you all, I'm fan of the Peugeot 505. Not that much for tuning, more to keep them original. It is becoming a classic car en very scarce in Holland at least (only 350 exist today). Most 505's are exported to Africa.

The European 505's look slightly different than the american ones as you will see. Mine is an GTI from 1986. The first to photo's were taking in Holland, in the region where I was born. The last three in the French mountains, where I'm living at the moment.

Welcome and nice GTI! My first experiences with a 505 was in Africa so I know well the volume of Peugeot that are sent there...mostly the GR and SR and the occasional STI.

Feel free to post more pics!

Thanks, I'm very happy with this preserved example. Only 125.000km in 20 years and always parked in a garage. Only a very little bit of rust near the front left wheel. Most Dutch 505's that are completely original are very rusty because of the all the rain and snow in our country.

In the early 90's several 10.000's 505 drove in Holland. Only 350 remain today. It's the same story as the 504. In the 80's and 90's almost all 504's in Europe were bought by African traders because they are strong cars with very strong engines (Not rarely they drive over 1.000.000 kilometers). Especially the carburator and diesel engine are loved because of their simple technics. When all 504's were exported or in hands of collectors, they started to buy the 505's which have the same charaterictics. Especially the Breaks were populair: They were the largest breaks produced in Europe.

To prove they are really strong here are some pictures taken in AFrika of 504 and 505 Breaks:

Wow thats a nice looking 505 GTi. Appears to be in really goos shape, you must take good care of it. I like the looks of the front and rear bumpers. The africa pictures are great. :(

Thanks. It still is in very good shape and has it's orignal paintwork. Only 125.000km in 20 years. The 505 becomes quite rare in Europe due to export to Africa, so I'm keeping him original. I cleaned the car last week, removed al the salt and it stays in my garage now until all the snow is gone. You know probably that old french cars rust very quickly. For the daily traffic I use my 306, the 505 is only for rides in the weekend when the weather is nice.

The 505 does not stand up to rust to well. My peugeot saw a minimal amount of salt exposure and it was starting to get pretty bad. Luckily my dad lended his expertise and helped me fabricate new galvanized rocket panels and repair the rusted areas. I finished up by undercoating the wheel wells and the bottom of the car with some rustoleum rust preventive paint. So far it has been holding up very well, but it does not see salt exposure anymore.

What engine does the GTI model have in it?

This may appeal to you americans:

The GTI has a 4 cylinder 2.3l 140 hp CHRYSLER engine. It seems it was manufactured in Great Britain, but it is an american brand if I'm not mistaking. In Europe were two more powerful engines avaible: a 4 cilinder turbo in the 505TI and a 2.9l V6 engine. The last one was only avaible for three years (1987,88 and 89) when the 604V6 was out of production and the 605V6 was not yet introduced.

By the way, you did a good job in restoring the carroserie. This is by far the weakest part of peugeots. Overall they are very strong cars. In Holland peugeots are only taken off the roads when they are too rusty or had a very bad accident. Engines and other technics are (almost) always OK.

Originally all European GTI models (1986->) had the Peugeot-Renault 1995 cm^3 ZEJ engine (with K-Jetronic, 120 hp) or the 2165 cm^3 ZDJ engine (L-Jetronic, 130 hp). The only Chrysler(/Simca/Talbot/Peugeot) engine used in the 505's is the 2155 cm^3 N9T (505 Turbo Injection, 150-180 hp).

Are you sure? This is what my uncle told me, who is Peugeot dealer and specialist for 30 years already(He is not the seller though). I'm sure I don't have a Turbo injection, so it will be the ZDJ than. He might overestimated my car maybe. :( Are you sure the ZDJ isn't a Chrysler engine?

I will check the documentation I got with the car soon. I only have it for a month now, so I don't know very much about it yet.

Yes, I'm 100 % sure of it (unless someone have swapped the engine of your car). ;-) You can read more about that engine from Hot Five OH's website. Here's a quote:

Alloy OHC Engine

(ZEJK, ZDJL)

In the late 1960's Peugeot And Renault signed an agreement to jointly develop engines and build them in a common engine factory. This factory was built at Douvrin.

-The Renault 20 and Peugeot 505 were the first cars to feature the 1995cc OHC 4 cylinder all alloy Douvrin engine. In the 505 it was called the ZEJK and featured Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and was fitted to the TI and STI models.

-In the early 1980s a long stroke version of this engine with 2165cc was released, called the ZDJL.

-In 1984 the 505 GTI was released with a higher compression (9.8:1) Bosch L-Jetronic injected version of this engine.

-These engines were used in many other different vehicles including Renault Fuegos, Renault 18s, Renault Espaces, Renault 21s, Renault 25s and Renault vans.

You might also want to look some of the newer sales brochures (PDF format) from my website. They are in Finnish but the engine specifications should be readable. ;-) There have been different horse power ratings in different countries because of local emission directives but I think 130 hp was the highest from the ZDJ engine.

:D I see You're a real 505-specialist. After seeing all this, I'm pretty sure you're right and my uncle was wrong. It has been over 15 years ago since he sold his last new 505 ofcourse.

Basically. USA, Switzerland and Sweden did have some emission limitations in -87 and -88 models. But USA versions have some different setups like exhaust and some other ones. Switzerland and Sweden did have emission limitations -> EGR was added in -85 models allready and hp was bit lower on those models. And catalysator was added in -88 models. Like in Finland catalysators and EGR:s were reguired from -90 onwards.

interesting... i've seen that EGR tap on a few early (85) exhaust manifolds, and on the side of the intake manifold, but they were just blocked off..

Switzerland is strict with emissions?

As an addition to my collection I bought 2 505 Break's. A GRD Familiale and a GLD Break, both from 1982. They are both not in perfect state, but by changing some carroserie and interieur parts I can make one in great condition! The other one I can easily sell for export to Africa. They are not interested in damage or rust. As long as the motor is running! I don't have the GLD at home yet, but here ar som pics of the GRD.

I sold the worst break immediately to Africa. It is running in Senegal now. The better one I sold to a Peugeot enthousiast in Holland. And I got for al lot less money 2X 305 diesel Break! :(

Seemed like a good deal, it's only a bit smaller. But man what is it slow! 0-60 miles in about 15 minutes. Top speed hardly 80 miles/h. No wonder with the 1500cc 45hp diesel engine. I first thought it had the 1900cc, but that is only in the newer models. In comparison, the 505 Break had a 2500cc diesel engine.

My collection of cars last summer:

The right one, the 205 was my first car. It is now becoming slowly destroyed by my brother. (See topic in pictures/videos)

I now got the original TRX alloy wheels for the GTI:

So this is currently standing in front of my house:

After a 'clean-up' of my collection of cars, I keep only these two. A 1984 GLD for every day use and the 1986 GTI for sunny summerdays. A 505 is surely the best peugeot I've driven, so I'm quite happy. I rather drive my GTI everyday, but the petrol costs here don't allow me to (about 6 dollars a gallon). :) Diesel is luckily a lot cheaper. :)
