Hi, I'm writing here both to gain advice and to advertise the car. I figured this car would be worth a lot more to enthusiasts than to people driving by on the street, but I honestly don't know the value. If anyone has input related to the value, or is interested, please let me know. I'd at least like to know a minimum price to entertain from passersby - ideally this would be high enough to price out the kid who wants to chop it up and put long axles and tiny wheels on it (or whatever the youths are doing to their cars these days).

The Car:

As per the title, it's an '89 Mi16 with 187,003 miles. It's located in West Michigan. Delivery or pickup are open to discussion.

The body and upholstery are in good condition, with some minor peeling of clearcoat on the roof.

Some parts are showing age:

The shift knob pulled off in my and was completely dry-rotted inside

The reverse trigger cable was too loose, so I cut some rubber tube as a standoff to make it OK for test-driving - I couldn't find how to quickly adjust the cable

Half the windows work

Needs tires - the tires on it have a couple slow leaks and are quite old, but should be good enough to drive to a tire shop

The battery currently in it is a bit undersized (I think; it's 500 CCA), and the metal clamp to hold it in place is missing

Probably other things in the same vein

I'm not aware of any major mechanical issues. The car was stored for a few years. The gas tank was drained after that, and it's still burning through some of the watery gas. I mention this because I won't be able to fairly tell you how it runs until I clear the fuel system a little more. As it stands, it runs a little rough (not all that rough, though) and starts slowly.

I expect to have some interior pictures soon, I just didn't have a vacuum on hand when I shot the exterior.

More to come as I take more pictures and respond to questions; please ask them! Thanks for your help and interest.

Hi, thanks for asking. The timing belt is definitely due, along with all other regular maintenance. I could inspect the timing belt, but since it is at least five years old I think we would be more concerned about age than wear. My landlord (the owner) has had it since 99 I think, and I believe it's been parked since 09, with any service happening before then. I haven't personally "had it" except that it's parked at the house I live in and I've taken it up and down the street for a test drive.

I've run it for a few minutes to clear the fuel system some more and it sounds better. It does miss with sudden throttle, is that a normal feature of this car? I thought that happened more to carbs than FI cars. This only happens when I deliberately jab the pedal.

It is not normal at all to misfire like that, that Bosch Motronic EFI was top of the line back in the day and Volvo,BMW and few other cars had the same EFI. With all the things you describe that is wrong with it I would say it needs $1000-2000 worth of work.

I would say that $1000 would be a great buy.

I live in SE Wisconsin and have been casually searching for a Mi16 for quite some time. I've brought back a handful of BMWs and Saabs from a similar state of repair, but considering what nice Mi16's go for (and parts supply costs in the US) a fly-and-drive for a documented and maintained car is better bang for the buck. I would make an offer but it would probably not make you too happy. Good luck with the sale!

"I would make an offer but it would probably not make you too happy." You might be surprised, as the car does need to go - not immediately, but soon. My goal is to get the car to someone who will actually value it instead of beating it to death. What running condition would make you comfortable to drive it the 6 or so hours home? I understand being nervous about an old timing belt, and that may be something I can address before selling.

Most of the problems I listed seem pretty secondary to me, and I think most of the money would go into catching up on maintenance. The misfire issue I'll look into in case I can fix it cheaply, with new plugs or injector cleaner etc.

Thanks for the estimates given so far. Here are some interior pictures:

Typical leather finish wear on the driver's seat:

Minor wear on most of the interior. It's not perfect, but I wouldn't call any of it significant with respect to the age.

Sorry for replying slowly, my attention just keeps getting diverted. I do appreciate the contributions to the thread, though!

While many of the problems may indeed be secondary, I'm somewhat of a perfectionist and as such the costs would add up quick...window regulators are $140 each before shipping from England, tires are about $500 before mount and balance these days, then the timing belt with water pump and tensioner/idlers would be at least $300 and a weekend of work...and that's assuming the brakes are up to snuff, misfire is easy to fix, etc. If I were a local I would be less hesitant to take a chance but even then, it would likely end up as a $2500 project (for me). Great examples sell for $2500-3000 these days so it's hard to justify doing all the work especially with all the unknowns...

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to beat you up over the car. If only we had parts support like the VW kids it would be a no-brainer! I just lose my patience for really involved projects a little bit more with every year of age, haha.

No worries, I understand the hesitation! I don't have any emotional investment in the car, so I take no offense.

As far as getting it in shape, does the work need to be done in a certain way to retain the value? i.e. can I do it myself with approved OER parts? Are there any parts for which it would be OK to use chinese knockoffs (like valve stem seals which it probably needs), or is that a big negative to buyers? I don't mind putting time in but I can't really afford to sink any significant money right now (otherwise the car would probably be mine already).

I guess I'll tentatively state that I'm hoping to get $1500. That is pretty flexible.

I would focus on the mechanicals - with a documented timing belt/tensioner/idler change and a 100% cured misfire, I would say that is a totally fair $1500 obo car. When it comes to something like valve seals, IMO, it's worth spending top dollar for Viton umbrella seals or other high-quality parts as the extra $20 would save the labor of doing the job again for the life of the car. Your typical buyer off the street would probably not care but an enthusiast (and, really, who else is into Peugeots in the USA other than enthusiasts) would appreciate the use of quality parts.

I would pay $500 for the car as it sits and show up with a trailer as I wouldn't risk the timing belt...and that would likely be at least a $500 round trip for me so it'd be a $1000 project car for me with many unknowns. Hence, my hesitant nature...

Thanks a lot for the info, both of you. It now seems that the owner wants to keep the car for a few reasons (the price being a minor one). I'll leave the thread up in case someone absolutely needs this car and wants to get in contact with him (it will be in southern Indiana instead of west Michigan when he takes it home fairly soon).
