  1. Great car, the XM and extremely rare in the US I suppose. There might be a problem getting license plates in the US when you import a XM, otherwise you can pick up one with such mileage in Holland for less than US$1000! Include shipping and you're still cheaper than this one but maybe not road legal in the US then.

It took a while, but this afternoon I tested it on a circuit for motorcross and made some interior pictures too: Not much different from another Familiale, only between the front seats the controls for the 4X4 transmission are inserted: high/low gear and difflock. The orange light indicates if the diff is locked. I wisely skipped this part of the track:

I'm looking forward meeting you. @Bean: Unfortunately it has only the 2.0l carburattor, I think it's the XN1. Still 100 HP, however a diesel would be better. Time for update though. As I was planning the Break was sold quite quickly to an enthousiast, but I just could make a fotoshoot with both in front of my house. If fitted back the original roofrack pn the Dagel today (no photo yet) and handed over the Break to the new owners.
  4. Check the fuses too. I believe both brake lights have their own separate fuses, at least in european cars.
  5. @ nich@nite: Yeah, all modern cars seem globally the same or derived from each other. But I just read in the newspaper that Peugeot is in 2013 coming with a new large luxury sedan. It's only in the concept phase, so probably a lot of things change, but this looks very promising if you want originality: It's a four-seater roomy car that can be converted easily to a 6-seater with folded up seats. It's 4 wheel drive with a 204 hp dieselengine in the front and two 30 hp electric engine on the back wheels.
  6. That's must have been scary indeed, that close to home! I heard a brief message on the dutch radio this morning. Will probably be on television this evening. So that really a unique 505 in Nigeria, the V6. I just found your topic explaining the problems. I know that most of 505 in europe are shipped to Dakar and they prefer diesels there, but that is probably for the small countries to the west (senegal, ghana, benin etc.) Again off topic: for a few years I am dreaming to drive to South Africa by 505 via the westroute. Because I have a Dangel now, I think this is the time to really plan this epic voyage. There will be quite some hurdles, not all roads in Africa are paved off course, I have especially doubts of the road quality in Gabon and Congo. More important, I am a bit afraid of safety issues. Do you know some regions/countries which I surely have to skip if I don't want to be robbed/killed? I am white and am probably travelling alone in a 4X4 Peugeot 505 in good condition. That might make me an ideal target in the middel of nowhere maybe? If I am going to do it, it will be probably in 2013 or late 2012. Have to check for the rain season in the tropic area. I really don't want to see the roads during that time. I will surely visit you then, Nigeria is a country which I have to cross for sure.

I thought this Cold war communist car hasn't been exported to america. Nowadays the Lada's are modern like other european cars, are they still for sale in Canada? (Sorry, no prices in this quiz. ) @Ikenna: Nice to hear, the V6 is also your favorit. Do you own one in Nigeria? I thought it was mainly 505 with diesel engines in that part of Africa. off topic: So you're from Abuja? Wasn't it in the news recently? Some buildings were blown up or collapsed or something?   8. Yeah, you're probably right. They just took a british number plate from home i think. @ Bean: Strange damage indeed. Hopefully they did found a 505 that has been already in an accident when they filmed this clip.
  9. I can agree with you both. Indeed much prettier than the 07-series. But it has been years that Peugeot produced a car that can match the feeling of the 505. I would say the 406 is the last real Peugeot. Models afterwards have that sturdy german feel to it, like all european cars in fact. Most european brands have lost their identity and are all more or less the same in ride quality/comfort.

  12. It's the same here. If classic Peugeots meet each other on the road, there is always a handwave or a lightflash as greeting. It has been a while that I've seen another 505 "in the wild". It has to be said, that we were driving quite slow there, so every 505 arriving after us, ran into the back of the group and stayed. So the group growed and growed.... Lot of surprised faces in other cars though.

Munchen is quite far to the south, but Dusseldorf is quite close, less than 100 miles from my house, around 1 hour by car (Highways are without speed limit in Germany). I'd love to show you some dutch countryside and of course some dutch Peugeots, maybe meet some other Peugeot enthousiasts too. We can make a tour in the Dangel. When are you coming to europe?
  14. Have you ever seen this on the US roads? It was 505's all over the place when we got close to our destination at "l'Adventure Peugeot" in Sochaux. Even in Europe that never happens. We visited the Peugeot factory, unfortunately we weren't allowed to take pictures there. Later that day we went to the Dangel factory, where nowadays Peugeot and Fiat vans and equiped with 4X4 transmission. They did 504's and 505's long ago. The French 505-club gave an in memoriam plaquette to the daughters of the recently departed Henri Dangel who has founded the factory. Now it is run by the two women. Prototype Peugeot Expert Pick-up 4X4: After 20 years, this Dangel had still no problems with the Dangel test circuit. In a small corner of the terrain I saw some reminders of earlier activities of Dangel: The day after we went to the car museum "Schlumpf". They have a huge amount of pre war-vehicles, but also Formula 1 cars through the years. Incredible collection of about 1000 cars. Back at the Peugeot museum. Among others these prototype were on display: The winner of the 24 hours of Le Mans in 2009, the Peugeot 908 came along from the public road! The is the very car that they used in the race. Plenty of flies were still attached on the bonnet. Instead of showing all the perfectly restaured Turbos and Dangel, I'd like to show this car, GRD 2.5 diesel. It shows that 505 are reliable and at least the diesel engine don't were out. Over 500.000 miles, but still running fine. Only some rust here and there: Some french guy made a clip on the parking:
  15. Funny, I didn't know that. Practical indeed when camping in the middle of nowhere. But in this case it is surely homebuilt. In Europe lots of people travel with a small trailer in which a tent is folded op, like on these Jeeps I suppose. These guys have just mounted such a trailer on the top of the roof of their Volvo 740 Estate. You can still see a wheel of the trailer above the middle side window.
  16. After the 504 and the 505 Peugeot stops producing midsized sedans. It's place was taken by a smaller sedan, the 405 or the larger 605. Later came the 406, 407 and 607. But now they are back with one luxury sedan, the 508. It should replace both the 407 and 607 and is available as sedan and estate. There will even be a hybride 4X4 version, the 508 RXH.
  17. Thanks for the replies. Yeah, first I was planning to do the journey in my 505 Break diesel because we could sleep easily in the back. But luckely this V6 came on my path, the extra power was very usefull during a mountain climb with 2 BMW 535i's (3.5liter 6 cylinder in line I believe). Dispite the 505 having 0.7 liter less engine, the Peugeot was easily the fastest on a hairpin climb! Luckily a peugeot friend of me wanted to sell his V6, because here they are also very rare. Only 150 were sold Holland of which around 30 are left!   18. Nice car, special version too. In Europe, the Turbos have never been available with automatic transmission. Ik hope the technical issues will not be a big problem.

  20. In Holland, the garbage run is organized anually. This is a "classic car" rally for people who don't have the money to buy a restaured Jaguar E-type or Bentley. It is to show that even virtually worthless cars can complete a 4000 miles rally though Europe in a week. It is encouraged to personalize or pimp your car. I joined them in 2010 with my brother. Because there were many stages over mountainious terrain, I looked for a cheap car (obviously peugeot) with quite some power. Luckely I found a 87 505 V6 manual with over 200.000 miles but technically sound. The route was from Holland through Germany, Poland, Czech repuhblic, Slowakia, Austria, Italia, Switzerland, France, Luxemburg and Belgium back to Holland. My brother did the pimping and wel succeeded with kind of Peugeot Sport colours. At the start point, all cars were together and some strange creations were there! First of all the other Peugeots: 405: 205: 605: But also this old type Citroen 2CV: A small car from eastern europe: This creation was really weird, but cool! These guys had a tent mounted on their roof: The karaoke van: DJ limo: No cooling problems for the 505 after welding the ventilator shut to the pulley: The first Peugeot RCZ I saw in real life:

    You're right, most Turbo are gray/gray, but I have had a gray/glacier one. Personnally I think it looks better than gray/gray, but rare to find, even in Europe. I would always go for colours that were available original. See

  24. OK, some more pictures here, I even forgot two cars! My current cars: The GLD Break: My current 505 GTD on the main square in Amsterdam: The RHD Dangel: The 604 SRDT was used as weddingcar for my sister and starred in a film about a seventies dutch prime-minister: Furthermore a have had a 604 V6TI automatic. Great car, well powered for a 70's luxury car (about 150 HP DIN I think), but quite thirsty. With fuel prizes in Holland doing about US$10 per gallon and me doing 40.000 miles a year, I wisely choose to buy a turbodiesel again (Half the fuel consumption and far lower prices for diesel here). Nice colour though, I think: Maybe the nicest car from the last years I had, was a 505 V6 manual. I bought it to do a rally across Europa (2500 miles) with it, visiting 9 countries. It's called "the garbage run" and is organized as a response on the classic car rallys for rich people with their well restored Jaguars and Porches. In this rally we show that it's possible to complete a long rally with cars that are worth less then 1000 dollar. It had over 200.000 miles, but engine and transmission were like new. Incredible how easily it climbed the Alps in Austria and Switzerland. Paintjob is done by my brother who joined me on the trip. Last july it went again on this rally, but now driven by a friend of me. Both times it completed the trip without problems. The starter engine was moody however, the car needed a push now and then. Anybody knows the brand of the car on the right on the last photo? I assume they were never sold in the US. @N9TE : It quite narrow in the old centres of the big cities. They were designed 1000 years ago or more. They were fine for the traffic of those days (horses and oxes mainly), but there have been some changes since.... Newer areas are much roomier, although in low density urban areas they tend to make roads small again with trees and other obstacles to keep the speed low for playing children. I might have make a topic about my 604 drive to France, that will have been with the light blue one. I have made some nice pictures that holiday. But my new 604 has been in France also 3 times already! A 404? Maybe, but it has to be a convertible then.
