  1. Hi all. I had planned to fix the grey beast featured under the project 505's on this site, but i just never got around to it. The motor had been rebuilt about a year or so before it started leaking coolant one faithful day. I'm not sure what's wrong, i suspect a cracked head. The car was kept in as good of shape as you can really keep one of these things these days. it's still got life in it, and the motor was very good other than the obvious problem for which it needs to be taken apart. It will drive short distances, but eventually consumes too much coolant and will start to get hot. I need to get rid of this thing so i'll work with you on price. I just ask that you be serious in wanting to take it off my hands, i dont want to give unnecessary tours, i just want to part with the car and would rather send it to someone who wants it than directly to the junk yard. Lots of time has gone into it in the past. See http://www.505turbo.com/project505.php Will not part out. If you're in the bay area that's the easiest. The best way to reach me is to email. drsnax at gmail.com
  2. Ok.. timing belt slipped, so expect bent valves. I haven't opened up the motor. It has 133 k miles on it. Beautiful exterior, decent interior, pretty good mechanically aside from the obvious broken engine. 350 dollars to the first one with cash. Please dont waste my time if you're not interested in actually buying the car. It will be going to the junk yard march 30th unless i have 350 cash in hand before the weekend. THis is my last attempt, i've been posting it on craigslist for over 6 months now. pictures: http://www.drsnax.com/Mi16/ -Trevor
  3. i may just fix the grey beast afterall. The mi16 has to go tho. Shame, i think it's going to pick'n'pull next sunday unless somebody gets it before then. I've been trying to sell it for far too long to want to deal with it anymore, or fix it for that matter. Thanks for the info about the head gasket. I will probably look into that more later. It would be nice to get the 505 running again, and maybe i'll sell it after i get a few more miles out of it. It's quite the fun car.
  4. One of you should buy my car. I have a new money pit now. haha The 505 was fun. if nobody buys it i might end up taking the head off and fixing it, but i just wont have the time for a while. I put a lot of work into fixing up that motor and it gave at least a good 25 hp/torque increase over stock at the same boost levels. It's too bad those stupid heads just keep cracking (this is what i assume happened anyway). I did the 'revised' procedure with the retorque and everything.
  5. THe m3 is amazing. The 505 was at one point nearly as fast under WOT... i kow this for a fact. HOwever, the power band in the m3 is so wide and so readily available that drivability doesn't even compare. The handling puts the 505 to shame (and i always thought the 505 handled fairly well too). And of course, the build quality isn't even in the same ballpark. The m3 is just... newer, and better engineered. And of course there's the nice interior that makes you feel like a king... :-)
  6. well... how much do you want to buy it for? Just make it worth my while to get rid of it and make a tiny dent in my newfound debt instead of having to rip the head off of it again. I'll try and get those pics soon, meanwhile if you really want to know what i'm doing now without my peugeots... well... see pics.
  7. ok guys i'll get some pics soon. CUrrent mileage is somewhere in the low 200K. the ODO says 198,000 or so, but the speedo cable has been disengaged for the last year of driving.. haha. yeaaaa who needs to know how fast they are going anyway. :-) So i'm guessing 215,000 miles.
  8. My 505 is going up for sale. Unfortunately it seems that the head is cracked as the car is now consuming coolant. It still drives but has to be fixed asap.. If you want to know more about the car, click on project cars.... grey beast on the top menu. it's the same car that is in a lot of the tech docs throughout this website. The engine was rebuilt by myself about a year and a half ago and has been running under stock boost conditions ever since. It has a limited slip diff from an earlier 505 turbo ('86 i think), sideskirts, front mount intercooler... and other than this it's pretty much stock. Great for someone who wants a project. I'm just putting this up for "best offer" right now. I'm not giving it away, but at the same time i would like to get rid of it soon and allow someone to continue the legacy of the grey beast. I have a bunch of misc parts that i will include with the car if you want them... Email me if you are interested.
  9. A rod is just a pinned I-beam, so yes it will tend to buckle in that direction under concentric loading. But that's assuming your ends are still ideally pinned. Dont assume this is always the case... as bean mentioned, it really depends on the failure mode. a jammed up engine component can create all sorts of eccentric loadings on that rod and deform it in just about any way you can think of. And remember this isn't a statics problem and the loadings aren't totally concentric. A 6k rpm engine has considerable dynamic loadings... There is a large bending moment applied to those rods, hence their I-beam shape. And yes all the stress related to that bending moment is concentrated in the material farthest away from the neautral axis of your rod... So it's important to have a nice finish on the outside of those rods. Go ahead and grind them, but make sure you dont leave them too rough along those edges... polish it up fairly well so cracks dont want to propogate. And lastly... if you're really considering creating enough power with a 505 to have any problems with your rods... i think you'll find problems elsewhere first... :-) remember to draw your free body diagrams. :-)
  10. may i ask how much you paid to get your seats redone??
  11. I'm selling my white 1989 405 mi16. It had a mishap and the timing belt slipped, so i'm assuming it has some bent valves. needs the head removed/reworked. 5speed, about 130k miles, beautiful aesthetically. Mechanically in very good condition aside from the engine work that needs to be done. Ask me if you want more info. This is in San Jose, Ca.
  12. dont forget about the volvo bypass valves. I'm a big fan of those things. they're easy to come by around here and fit will in your pocket. They are all metal construction (aside from necessary diaphragms and seals) and seem to work beautifully. PSHHHHH
  13. Turbo never died, engine eventually died after some heavy abuse.. haha. I think we only boosted in the 19-21'ish range on a cold winter night with a gallon of xylene in the fuel or something. THe car ran about 16 psi for quite some time and stayed healthy, but some balls out redline driving alongside a friend's SRT4 ended in the cracked pistons and then the rebuild. After all the rebuild work the car is running a happy 10-11 psi with the front mount IC and has some impressive power. It'd be safe to say that i've got a good 20 horse increase over stock. I would hope so for all the meticulous shit i did to that motor. It's my daily driver now so i can't beat the living shit out of it.. haha. But i'm extremely happy with it as is and am expecting it to last for some time... maybe i can turn it into a project again when i get another car. i still wish i got the chance to do megasquirt.
  14. It comes as no surprise. Anybody have some mi16 valves or a whole head they wanna get rid of?
