505 GR XN1 Weber conversion help

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I purchased a 1980 505 GR. XN1 The car is in very good condition overall. The body is nearly perfect with the exception on a sun faded roof and off colour hood. And the best part, it's Brown! It is a very base model with the only option being a working clock in the center console. It also cam with a set of early turbo wheels with decent rubber. The car did run though the slave cylinder needed bleeding so wasn't able to test drive. It ran rough as well due to the gunky old carb and likely the vacuum system. I had a brand new weber sitting on the shelf and decided to give it a whirl as it literally bolted right up! Linkage is rigged up temporary as I need to source something better. However the car started right up and ran ultra smooth!  That is until it heated up to temp. I took it for a short test run, once it reached full temp it bucked and gurgled and stalled out. I got it restarted and it immediately began to smoke heavily, like burning oil smoke. I am pretty sure this has to do with the emissions system and the air pump. Not sure how to deal with this. I would really like to delete the whole system but have been looking for information on where to start? Anyone have experience with these systems?

Thanks

Air pump on XN1 engine? Where exactly is it located? On the carburetor? What does it look like?

My only experience with XN1 is with Solex carburetor.  I have heard the Weber,  but I am ok with the Solex that is factory. So, I don't have any knowledge on how to convert to Weber on XN1 from Solex.

From what I can put together, this version of air pump was only used on 1980 and 1981 models in north america? They switched to a different "puslair" system. The pump is belt driven and located beside the alternator and is connected via a number of 1" rubber hoses both supply and delivery as well as several vacuum lines . There are also a couple of control valve looking things, all controlled via the vacuum lines. There is only one vacuum inlet on the weber and about a half a gazillion on the solex which is tired and in need of a rebuild. The Weber sounds much better and seems to be an instant improvement by the seat dyno. Without the diagram of the vacuum system etc. (apparently this was a sticker under the hood and the original hood is not on the car) I was just guessing at vacuum connections and once the motor came up to temp, somehow oil pressure was being raised in the case and forcing oil into the combustion chambers.

I think I have it sorted. I have disconnected all of the vacuum lines to the control valves, the only vacuum line still in use is the carb to distributor and this now seems to be working. At this point I am going to leave everything in situ and drive it. Then decide whether or not to remove the system.

I have to say, she has cast a spell on me unlike the other cars in the garage. I can't stop thinking about her!

Thanks for the explanation.  At least,  I now know such a thing also exist on 505 produced outside Nigeria.

All the 504 & 505 with XN1 produced and sold in Nigeria had only Solex carburetor, both single and double barrel. So, I have never experienced or seen Weber carburetor.
