N9TEA rebuild head

Guess it's time for me to start documenting the head-rebuild that was part of my blown head gasket saga.

Goals:

  • Rebuild turbo - maybe with a few more zots
  • Rebuild head
  • change out head gasket
  • R&R everything that gets removed

Things are ugly. I had an oil analysis on this engine about six months ago and they said something about coolant in the oil. They couldn't say defininatively, but car ran great. Never overheated.

One day after coming home, the low coolant light comes on. Odd, I've been watching that like a hawk since I swapped over to Toyota red coolant and changed the hoses. Fired it up and a lot of white smoke.

Yep, headgasket.

Do ya think?

Bad news. Sorry to see and hear about another one. If I were in the business of fixing these engines, even with the small number extant, I would be a rich man.

It's not the overheating that get them, from what I've seen. Overboosting is the very, very worst. An underfilled and/or improperly bled cooling system is another. Just about anything can cause these things to fail, what with the poorly designed head.
