  1. Hi everyone, haven`t posted in a while as i haven`t had any problems! Wanted to ask about my latest problem on my 1986 505 TD Xd3t engine please. She has been running fine for a long time but yesterday she started to play up. When driving along she goes fine when you start off under acceleration but when you hit the first stop of the day she loses rpm`s as you slow down and cuts out. When you start her again she won`t idle but if you push down on the acceleator she will keep running but when you move off again then slow down she dies again. Feels like a fuel problem as the engine is fine, valve adjustment good and no other problems. A new fuel filter was put in 1000 miles ago.

The only thing i can add is that i thought it might be air in the filter/fuel line and pumped the button on top of the fuel filter after loosening the air bleed screw. Air bubbles kept coming out while i pumped and the thing that i noticed more was that diesel was coming out from the base of the black button that you have to pump to bleed the system of air- !

Any ideas on this one please?--If the diesel coming out from the base of the black button is wrong is it possible to fit a new diaphram underneath it as i assume that the old one is perished or do you have to buy a complete new filter unit?--Any advice much appreciated as always. Couple of pictures attached to show filter unit and black pump button on top!--Thanks--Jerro

  2. Ok, so it`s me again, i haven`t gone out of my mind (yet) but wanted to confirm which are intake and which are exhaust valves in my picture ( 2.5 -XD3T turbo diesel 1986) before i go ahead and adjust the valve clearances, just in case there is some strange Peugeot quirk where one is french and one is English. Am i right to say that in my photo, from the bottom of pic upwards the valves are --inlet--EXHAUST --EXHAUST--inlet --inlet--EXHAUST--EXHAUST-- inlet ? Looking at the manifolds this looks about right but i don`t want to blow it!---Thanks as always--Jerropost-1154-0-45354800-1358295738_thumb.jp

  3. Hi to everyone that is under their Pug wrenching! I didn`t think i would be posting much this side of Christmas but here we go again. Please can anyone tell me the different timing marks on the crankshaft pulley when you adjust your valve clearances. Thanks to our forum here i have the valve clearance specs and which order to do them in but i haven`t got the timing mark position when you do this that makes sense to me. Any info most welcome. My family is buying me a new Haynes manual for Christmas to replace the one that disappeared recently when all i want is a new car (Peugeot--hint hint)

  4. Hi all, well just another techno question, this time it is the fuel gauge on the dash. The needle shows the fuel level half the time but the other half it slowly goes down towards empty and stays there for a while when you are driving, the next time you glance at it the needle has moved back up to what i assume is the correct level. Anyone had this at all and any pointers in where to check the problem please? When you put some diesel in at the garage the needle does go up to roughly where it should be but slides down after a while then comes back up!-- Thanks as always -Jerro

  5. Hi everyone, well here i go with another request for advice please. Having had the fuel pump timing adjusted i feel i need to do my valve clearances and of course would like to know the clearances and any `tricks` that might be worth knowing when doing this? 1986 505- XD3T engine 2.5 lt TD sedan.- I`m sure i could find them in a manual but would prefer to hear it from the forum which i trust more than the manual at this point! Other than remove rocker cover, check and adjust valves, replace rocker cover, anything else. I`d need to ask 1-what torque is needed on the valve adjustment inlet and exhaust? 2- in order to get valves full open or closed which timing mark to line up and where or just rotate engine until valve `appears` open/closed. Anyway, any advise appreciated!--Thanks as always

  6. Hi all, got a question as usual! Anyone know the specifics of the unit shown in the (hopefully) attached picture. Firstly i must ask what is the `exit` pipe at the right of the unit in the picture attached to after it leaves the unit at the back and travels downwards to ?. I followed mine and it appears to connect to a `T` piece.Close to this T piece is an open metal pipe coming out of another `unit` of some kind that if i pump the unit shown in the picture air comes out of this small metal pipe. Should this small metal pipe be open please? Also, what is the setting at the spring that you can see in the picture? Mine came loose and fell off, i put another spring on and doesn`t seem to make any difference to the cars running but should the spring be tight, loose or ?--Thanks as always--Jerro

  7. Thanks very very much for the tips, really appreciate them and i shall get on and follow them up and report the outcome, it sure isn`t what you know it`s who you know! -Jerro

----------UPDATE----------Thanks once again everyone, cleaned all connections which were dusty/ gritty (like soil!) and have not had any problems since then and running beautifully, i will have to enter the Paris Dakar now!--Thanks

  8. Hi everyone, well i still have my Pug (1986 505s Turbo diesel) and at $4.00 / gallon she still pays for herself! Anyway, anyone got any ideas about my `preheat indicator` light on the dash that doesn`t always come on when you turn on the ignition and of course she won`t start without the preheat first. When the preheat light does come on the `glow plug relay` must be working because after some seconds the preheat light goes off and she starts fine. If there is no other relay or gadget between the glow plugs and the source of power from the battery i may as well just replace the `glow plug relay`?? -- Example of glow plug relay but not the actual one in my car in poor quality pic below!--Thanks as always -- Jerro

  9. Hi good people, having solved the cold 1st start of the day smoke issue by advancing the injector pump timing a little my Pug is running really well. This question is about the cold start `assist` unit next to the injector pump that is supposed to pull the throttle linkage back a little when cold to increase the rpm`s until the engine temperature has gone up. At the front of the `unit` the cable runs straight to the throttle linkage and at the back there is the inlet and outlet pipe which i assume must be for the radiator coolant to pass through. I`m also assuming that there is a thermostat type valve inside. Mine does not seem to be pulling the throttle linkage back when cold. You can see it all in the photo (i hope!).2 questions please, what is this unit `called` and can i take it off and clean it to see if it is jammed or should i get a new one?--Thanks as always---

  10. My 1986 Peugeot 2.5s TD auto-XD3T engine 100000 miles--new injector nozzles-air filter-Fuel filter-perfect interior- no rust-very good tires-service history-will need the hood touched up at some point. She doesn`t need emmission testing here in Seattle WA anymore owing to her age. I have posted several posts here on 505 turbo about her smoky `1st start of the day` but runs beautifully for all the start ups or travel thereafter. I have had various helpful suggestions boiling down to `get the injector pump timing set` which i am going to do shortly as it is a newer pump. If she doesn`t smoke on first start of the day after that i will probably keep her. Yes you can get parts! at least here in WA you can. I don`t know if we are allowed to just ask for offers on 505Turbo but correct me if i`m wrong. In the car prices book here Peugeot isn`t even listed! $1800? - Enough said! ohmy.gif

Update--###--Got the timing advanced a little at our local diesel Peugeot shop--Guess what?--No more smoke on first start of the day!! Now for the Paris Dakar rally-## laugh.gif

  11. Oil smokes blue - diesel smokes white... If it's blue then Frank's suggestion is worth a try for sure. If it's white - I'd still say low compression or pump timing.

VERY curious to here what the result is once you get the pump timed.

----######## Got the injector pump advanced a little (the simple method of doing it by ear not the `techno` method) NO MORE SMOKE ON 1st START OF THE DAY!!!!!!!!!!!###########################-- Thanks to all the folk on here with great suggestions and a sympathetic ear for an amateur mechanic and diesel lover

  12. Good news to hear on your car jerro!

Thanks Jeff-- Yup! I was really excited! Have you ever had `those` times when you assemble something and it leaks on you!. I am taking her to get the injector pump checked and set as i just can`t live with that 1st start up of the day smoke. I`m jumping the gun here but i`ve also put her in the `for sale` section in case her smoky start is not cured or helped by the inj. pump timing. If she quits smoking (20 per day ) i`ll keep her as a good diesel is a treat these days with the gas prices getting screwed up.--Thanks

  13. Don't be too motivated for the Haynes manual. It's better than nothing, but it can't hold a candle to the real factory manual. I have most of the Peugeot original service manuals for my car someplace, but right now the Clutch and Transmission one is the only one I can lay my hands on. The Haynes manual doesn't show or mention those two vacuum solenoids or whatever they are. The overall picture of the Engine compartment in the Haynes manual looks like it's a right hand drive car, so some things are on the opposite side from my car but I can't make out those things on either side in their picture.

If you happen to dig up a manual of some sort on the 505 TD engine let me know!
