Goce's 06 Peugeot 607 Adventures ( headaches)

Well i've been driving the 607 a bit only on "private property" because of the coronavirus many or the inspection stations are closed and the DMV is worse than before. But as always know the trouble hunting begins, I had one message about auto adjust headlamps on the dashboard but after 30km the ABS/ESP/Adjustable suspension light come on, it seems to happen when i touch the brake pedal after few turns, also when the gearbox gets up to temp seems to downshift hard and going from park to drive there is a hard engagement, i've read what i could find online and everyone is saying to do a fluid flash, from the look thru the service history i only found one note where they written gearbox replaced in 2016 and found a 2015 date on the gearbox heat exchanger. This vehicle runs a common Aisin TF-80sc gearbox that many volvos use, but many of the parts stores are closed so i had to make a trip to the main city to find some gearbox oil, main peugeot service centre was a bust , ones they heard of the 2,7 hdi, they said No we don't work on those and have no oil for them. So after some search i found me the main importer of Mannol oils, germany company the guy working at the counter said that my car needs Dexron 6 but i wasn't fooled, i know Dexron 6 come put only a few years ago and my car is 15 years old so i did a bit of searching on my phone and found the right mannol oil for my box. He looked it up and he did not had it in his warehouse but he could order it, so i left him a deposit and arranged for 8 L do be delivered to my city. After i got back i still had some time to get the rims i bought to wash them inside and out and send down the curved edges most of the scratches are only in the powder coating only few are down to the aluminium i don't want to use any filler i'll just blend them in.

Today my gearbox oil arrived and i got to work changing it to do it right way i had to dig out an old old PC that supports Lexia 3, Peugeot Diagnostic, this took 2 hours i had to install windows xp and PP2000 then i lifted the 607 on 4 jack stands had to drop the bottome brace to get to the drain plug and fire the engine and left it running for an hours to get the gearbox oil to 60 degrees the with the engine off i drain all the oil and filled it with new oil, fired it went thru all the gears up and down with the wheels turning got the new oil to mix with the old and up to 60 degrees again and drain it again then i filled it again and did it all over again, last thing i did is to set the level with the engine running at 60 degrees temp till it drips. Much more difficult task than on a manual gearbox and took me more than 6 hours. Next day i took it out for a drive, it shifts nicer no jerky shifting when cold and when i collected all the old oil i only had 6,5 liters and had 8 so the box was 1,5l down on oil. I hate wannabe mechanics that don't care.

What colour was the oil on the first drain?  If it was replaced in 2016 you'd hope it was still pretty clean...

When I flushed my older 5sp Volvo it took 10L using the cooler line to drain when the motor was running using the drain 2L, Fill 2L method before it came out clean.  Different model transmission, and the oil was quite dark when I did it.  I also put in a remote hydraulic oil filter into the cooler line circuit, which I will also do on my 06 V70R when I flush it's fluid this summer - it's been 40K miles since I did the Valve body.

It was dark, it did not have any burn smell but i can tell it had a hard life, and whoever tried to change it, set the level with the engine off, because that much will drain out on the small drain plug when i did the second drain, i'm sure that 1,5l low on fluid wasn't too good for it. I'm not a big fan on automatic, but i can tell this is a much more refined and sophisticated gearbox, staff like it selects neutral when you are sitting at the lights for longer time, keeping the engine in its power range. Today i did mount the 18's i'll make a separate post for them i'll like your thoughts, will it affect it, i'm sure tires being undersized affect its shifting.

Today early in the morning i drop off the freshly touched up rims and tires to be mounted at the tire shop, pictures don't do the tires justice, how big and wide they are i can only fit one tire in the trunk of my car, i had to cover my seats and use them. Because of the quarantine there are only few tire shops open and wanting to be as correct as i can i unloaded the tires and rims and left them my phone number to call me when they are done, this way we all avoid any direct contact. After lunch they called, they had mounded them and pressure washed them and left the away from the public area to be safe for me to load them, they have their act together and price for mounting 4 tires with new valves and balancing them with stick on weights 10 $ for all of them, normal pricing. I was surprised in this time they turn out to be real pro's. Got them home, and mounted them to the 607 with new centre caps and new chrome bolt covers, i ordered those black aftermarket centre caps to compliment the black paint but vehicle paint being metallic black and caps solid black don't mach at all i'll be looking for some OEM silver ones. I wanted to take it out for a drive to feel how it drives with the right size tires but by the time i was done, stay at home order was in place.

As for undersized tires I don’t think that would affect anything because the car would have no way to know the tires were smaller.  The effective gear ratio would change so it might accelerate quicker, and speedo would read low.

Being low on oil was definitely a bad thing, and with fresh fluid it should be much happier.  Still odd that it has no cooler set up.

I really like this 6sp auto and the tuning it has in the Volvo because it doesn’t hunt for gears and allows the torque of the motor to get it done.  I can’t stand the way the 8 and 10 sp autos drive these days as they’re always hunting for gears and downshifting like crazy for simple accelerations like lane changes.

Took it for a drive, not having A/C in a black car in the south of europe is something i need to fix, but the tires made really big difference, now even the steering wheel is more direct, also i'm sure traction control was kicking in because now with 245 is pulling harder and very linear, i also took apart and clean the brake pedal switch so i have ABS and other system back working, i need to check my speedo now because i've seen it make a saturn correction shortly after i began driving at a constant speed, at first it was visually showing low, could it be using the navigation to compare to GPS speed?

Today i had some time to spare so i used some reconditioning supplies to clean and repair the seats on this car, they are genuine leather, but someone has something on his belt and scratched the leather also baking in the sun the leather was very dry, i spent all the time focusing only on the passenger seat because i had better access, the wax with color that i used was a perfect match and the scratches disappeared, not the biggest job but made a big difference.

Last few days i've been doing my research on how the variable stroke aircon compressor works in this car, i did lots of diagnoses on the wiring and finally after all of trouble shooting is started working, must have been a loose connection, you can see the difference 25 outside 4 degrees in the vents i also had time to restore the leather on the drivers seat and apply what i had left on the back seat, the coronavirus is making hard to buy staff. I have couple more issues to work out and i plan to register it, having 3 cars registered this year is going to be a huge financial weight.

The A/C makes all the difference, we do have some nice twisty roads and the electronic suspension sure makes the difference, is not hard ride but body roll is very controlled, also its size there is no chance to get it on 2 wheels. Its a real change when i step form it or from my 605 in my Lada Niva i find my self braking mid corner many times because i'm at the limit of rolling it over but to be fair it's made for completely different purpose and with this combination one for road and other for off road use is much more suited for my purposes.

Your first post was Feb 2nd - And now you're posting pictures of driving it on a gorgeous mountain road - Well done!

How do you find the transmission shifts after the fluid service?

Fully agree on having multiple cars that fit different styles.  I'd much rather have 2-3 cheap cars than one nice one.  :)

I'm in and out of many cars so going from manual to auto is beginning to don't matter that much, i'm not searching for the clutch pedal. Going from a manly russian 4 speed to double clutch with pedals is worlds apart but as far the asian in the 607 is a very good gearbox. The fluid flash did help a lot smoother longer i drive it, it still some time slams only first gear when up to temp. I want to drive it a bit and do one more flash to get more of the old fluid change. Manual mode is surprisingly quickly much quicker than VW's DSG.

The 607 go couple of decals, on the front wings, i'm not a big sticker or decal person, but it was very plain jane. I also glue on this: I ❤️ Peugeot decal on the Little Niva, but i think it has organ rejection because the battery in it failed right when i installed it so had to buy a new battery. Glueing three decals turn out costly, that battery wasn't cheap.

Today was the day, to get this vehicle inspected, insured and road legal, the first picture may look familiar but in a different vehicle, i first went with my 605 to get insurance and to make sure the inspection station is open, then i took the 607 there, it passed no problem, the guys there commented that i've bought a really good car, not a spec of rust no oil leaks real clean underneath, only if they know what i had to do for it not to have oil leaks, registration and insurance is exactly double then on my 605 and a bit more than double than for the little niva.

Thank you guys, i've been driving it few days now, and i can tell the steering wheel is not returning on center as is should, the old tires have excessive wear on the inside, so i took it to get the front end aligned. It was tow out, it got aligned and now the steering wheel is returning as it should, fuel consumption is 10-12L/100km by the board computer.

I'm a bit behind with my updates, i've been driving the 607 almost daily, i've driven the first 500 km. So i decided to do a oil change, to get the impurities out. 7 liters of 5w30, new oil filter about an hour of labor and it was done. Other things worth mentioning, the fuel consumption improved now i'm at 10/100km diesel. The ride is much more sporty then my old 605 the electric dumpers eliminate the body roll and the engine is suprasing also, unlike many turbocharged engines that don't make much power at the top of the rev range, this engine pulls harder and harder up to 4500rpm.

Hello Goce,

I have same Z9 607 V6 like yours (petrol though - ES9A). Congratulations on your project completion.

The AM6 is a smooth shifting Automatic Gearbox. However, I Converted mine to manual transmission last month (will create a different thread on it in this section, to show how it the conversion went down).

I could see on one of the PP2000 screenshot that the brake switch is failing and possibly the cause of the ABS/ESP warning sign. Have you sorted it out?

As for the dexron 6 ATF, I actually used it on mine about 2 years ago and it worked well with the gearbox until I removed it in May last month for manual gearbox. Though the brand I used was Total fluidmatic MV LV.

Congratulations once more. The Z9 is truly an amazing lion. I love mine and the love grew stronger when he became manual.

Also want to point out that I have owned Peugeot 605 V6 as well (ZPJ Engine) which inspired me to get the 607 V6 phase II. The 605 never really let me down for once in all my trips with the lion in Nigeria, except few wearable parts that broke, like when clutch cable broke and I still drove him to my destination clutchless, and when one of the front brake flexible hose blocked on a journey and I blocked that caliper and continued on the journey with only 3 wheels brake working. The 605 & 607 are both great cars. Enjoy
