Bean
Here is a link to a bunch of maintenance, which includes setting the valves. It was compiled by Peugeot Pete - an amazing resource that blessed Peugeot-L with his knowledge during the last stages of his life... http://peugeot.mainspot.net/tips/505-XN6.shtml To know the exhaust valve is fully open you basically just have to watch it go down as far as possible while turning the crank. In the middle of where it stops going down, and where it starts to come back is when the valve is fully open. (Exhaust valves are closest to exhaust manifold.) Stewart
Well here goes! The engine is numbered from the firewall end 1234. 1 on firewall 4 is the fan end. The firing order is 1342. If you remove the sparkplugs it is an easier job and you can check their condition, too. There is two easy ways to turn the engine by hand. One is to use the nut on the alternator and to then use a socket or spanner to turn the belt . You sometimes need to apply a little force on the belt to get it to grip. The other way, if you have a fixed fan is to use the fan and turn it to make the engine turn, Clockwise as you stand looking at the engine. Turn the engine and you will see the valves go up and down. Turn it so that No1 ex valve is fully open. Several degrees off dead open is fine, the cam is OK with that. You now adjust the next Inlet valve in the firing order and the the ex . Clearances are 0.10mm In and 0.25mm ex. So Ex valve 1 open................. Adjust Inlet on cyl 3 then Ex on Cyl 4, turn engine until Ex 3 is fully open and, Ex valve 3 open..................Adjust Inlet on cyl 4 then Ex on Cyl 2, turn engine until Ex 4 is fully open and, Ex valve 4 open...................Adjust Inlet on cyl 2 then Ex on Cyl 1, turn engine until Ex 2 is fully open and, Ex valve 2 open...................Adjust Inlet on cyl 1 then Ex on cyl 3. Ex Open 1 Adj 3In. 4 ex. Ex open 3 adj 4 in 2 ex. Ex open 4 adj 2in 1ex Ex open 2 adl 1 in 3 ex. You see the pattern? 1342 ?

Stewart
Nasser, I can help with the tdc question. No the exhaust valve is not fully open, it will either be closed and the piston is in compression or the valve will be just off it's seat closing. When you turn the engine you will notice the valve open about 1 cm then immediately start to close. Just around that position is fine for adjusting the rest of the valves. For ignition the ignition coil has either a + or 15 and either a - or a 1 on the top of the coil. +(15) is where the power wire goes on. I think that supply wire has a number 1 on it. I'll check for you. It seems on transistorized ign power is from a number 2 wire. http://www.scribd.com/doc/34108145/Workshop-Manual-Peugeot-505-Chapter-12-Electrical
