What did you do today?

Last summer I got a 3M headlight restoration kit with the main intention of doing the headlights on my wife's Honda which were very cloudy. I figured it might also be useful on the Peugeot tail lights and maybe on the plastic surround of the headlights, but more pressing things came up and I never got around to it. Sunday I was tasked to shampoo the upholstery in the Honda, and my wife asked if I could do the headlights as well, so I got out the kit and gave it a shot. I've got to earn my Peugeot work time. The first headlight took me about 45 minutes. The second one took somewhat less, and I think they came out great, if I do say so myself. I'm not sure these Pictures do it justice, either as to how bad it was, or how good it came out, but my wife is ecstatic about it.

Savo - your 405 Mi-16 looks AMAZING - did you do the body work yourself? Top notch. :)

I've been slacking off this last little while! Crazy busy with all sorts of stuff. :)

Big news was that I sold the 98' V70 T5m... :( I kind of wanted to keep it, and priced it accordingly so that I didn't lose any money and got paid for my labour and such, but a buddy at work really liked the car, and after trying to divert him to maybe an R or some other V70 he ponied up with my asking price so I let it go.

Cool news is that I picked up a Bilstein HD suspension for an 850 wagon for a great deal - bought them on a hunch as the rear shocks looked dimensionally similar to the 505 rear shocks. Turns out they're pretty much bang on dimensionally, appear to have a bit more compression damping, but rebound is really pretty light. Front struts surprisingly are very close to fitting the Peugeot spindle, but tire clearance with the stock spring perch is going to be too tight - so I'll need to have the perches machined off and threaded sleeves installed. We had a snow storm today, and weather was crappy last night so I only got some very preliminary comparisons done - but it looks good so far.

Driver for the suspension ideas was that the 89' is trashed. Front shocks almost entirely gone, rear on their way with leaking shocks. I have used stuff to go in, but that's never any fun... :D Hoping to install the rear shocks very soon, and see if I can figure out a solution for making the HD's coil overs cheap and easy so I can at least try them out. Cool thing is that the Bilstein's are revalveable - so I contacted the Canadian Distributor to see what kinds of options I'd have for either having these revalved, or for ordering more suitable components that would be even better.

So while I haven't been very active - I still have a TON of stuff on the go. :)

Picked up some 5-lug adapters for my E30 a few weeks ago [putting on flame-suit]. I know a lot of guys talk trash about adapters, but the manufacturer of these adapters swears by them, and is well-known, and active in the BMW community. The adapters are 18mm and 20mm, respectively. I will be installing them in a reverse-stagger setup, to maintain a stagger, yet not ridiculous amount of poke in the rear.

To go along with the new 5-lug setup, I pulled the trigger on a set of Contour II's off of an E36 M3. They are 17x7.5 and 8.5 in the rear. Will need to have the fenders rolled definitely. Also need to find some new rubber to wrap them in, so if anyone has any recommendations for 205/40 F 215/40 R or 215/40 F 235/40 R let me know! :D

Wheels look like this. Pretty good finish too. These will most likely be temporary until I can track down a set of M-System's off of the E34 M5 with the famous "throwing star" covers.

Nice pick up. Just by looking at the wheel I figured out what they came off. My brother has E30...Funny thing is he was talking smack last week about MI16 and long story short we raced and he lost lol.

Oh I wouldn't doubt it...what model does he have?

There is a famous advertisement for the 505 T.I. (1986, I think?) which pretty much dissed BMW's E30 325 (m20b25 engine).

I had the chance to drive Victor Van Tress' famous 505TI Stock racer last summer in Berkeley, and I honestly think it's just as fast, if not quicker than my E30 (m42b18 engine).

So you went 4x100 to 5x120? No flame suit need for those - I'm just not a fan of changes in lug counts with adapters as they aren't symetrical and that can have issues if not done properly.

Gear up good if you run stretched tires on those wheels however. Run tires square shouldered or prepared to be mercilessly taunted and demeaned by actual car guys. I love a nicely stanced car, but the stretched tire fad is just plan dangerous AND it looks stupid. :)

Run 235's min on the 8.5's, 215 - 225's on the 7.5's. Roll fenders or do whatever you need to make them fit, but NOT stretched skinny tires so they fit. If your car is ABS you'll need to make sure revolutions per mile front and rear are close othewise your ABS might freak out. If they don't fit - trade the 8.5's to someone else wanting to do the wide square set up and run 7.5's all round.

Keep in mind with a little 1.8 it'll stick like glue in the corners, but all that weight is going to kill whatever power the car used to feel like it had. As for your E30 being as fast as Red - I can assure you that would only be true off boost... :P

Fair enough, as I was only cruising around the streets which had stoplights. I got to get David's 505 (on FB group) up to a little higher revs and had the best grounds to test it on - miles of twisties in the Berkeley hills. Definitely got to feel the boost come on, and it was nice.

Also, stretched tires?! I thought you should know me by now Rabin :D Not a far of the hella flush look. I'm generally not a fan of the slammed car look, I don't see any glamor in ruining a car's ride and handling.

@Stavo - yep those eta's are slugs. I'd say, the "non-turbo diesel 505's" of our community. :D

And for the record, the adapters aren't meant to be permanent, as soon as I have the disposable income to do so, I'm planning on doing a true 5-lug swap using E36 318ti bits and such. I know I'm gonna want some bigger brakes all around for the added weight.

The m42 engine really is good for what it is. I had a 24V swap from an e36 on the top of my list originally, but I realized that what I have does the job pretty well, and the M42 makes great torque. Fuel efficient too.

Here are some recent shots of my car.

That statement got me worried as 205 and 215's on those rims would be stretched. 215/235's are the the skinniest tires I'd run, and should be farily square shouldered.

That is a crap load of rubber under that little E30 that it really won't be able to do much with. Some R-comps on the stock BBS wheels and your car would be way faster. The look it will have however will likely be worth it. :) It's not that fast to begin with - so may as well look nice.

I just hope you can get the clearance you need to run the set up.

Well it looks like I'm replacing driver front window today.Paint less guy was finishing removing dings and dents and somehow broke the window.

that sucks! i hope they made good on it...

@rabin, @sina -- i have a theory about the guys that stretch their tires on their rims -- they love their rims (wheelwhores) but hate tires, or can't be bothered with them...

I think the final opinion is 215/40 17 in the front and 235/40 17 in the rear (If I decide to keep it staggered with 8.5's in the rear). I reached this conclusion after consulting the R3VLimited/Bimmerforums "wheel fitment expert/moderator", as well as a few other guys. He said I could achieve this with only rolling the rears, but I think I'm going to roll the fronts as well. He showed me a few of his clients' cars that had the same if not similar fitments, and they looked pretty good, and since it'll be obtainable w/o stretch, I think everything's gonna work out fine ;)

The 45's are a little too tall for the e30's fenders, and my E30 is a 1988+ model (91) so it has the lower rear arches.

All in all, nothing's been mounted, mocked, or tested yet - hell, maybe it'll all be a little too "donkish" for my taste...we'll see.

One strike against the staggered set up is that it ruins the handling balance and makes the car understeer more since the rear has much more traction now... I personally prefer square set ups as it retains the handling balance better.

Looks wise - staggered set ups look cool as hell - but with such a big jump over stock it's going to look great staggered or square.

I run 215's on the Volvo's 7.5" wheels and it's pretty much perfect with nice square shoulders. I preferred 225's though as it had better rim protection from curbing - so if you did get rid of the stagger all 4 at 225 would be a nice alternative.

You live in a very nice part of the world Sina - great pic too.

BTW - I recently cut off my long hair (past shoulders), and it's funny how many people commented on it. I had no idea my long hair touched so many lives! lol

Built a deck with my father-in-law this past weekend. 16x13.5 ish feet, with 2x8 base and 5/4" cedar decking on it. Used the Camo fastening system and I'm very impressed with the results. I'll post pics when it stops raining and I can complete the final bit. Deck is ~2' away from the back door, sits on the ground essentially, and I'm building a platform between the house and deck. Regina is really bad for it's "gumbo" type ground, so it moves a fair bit. Having the deck disconnected from the house avoids any settling or heaving issues..

My eldest daughter is turning 6 and we're having a back yard party, so priority 1 is to ensure the back yard is a great party place. Sadly this is impacting my ability to get my 89' done for PPIHC in a bad way - but still pales in comparison to making my little girl happy first.
