It's been a little while since I updated this thread, so I figured I'd drop an update. I've been back at my parents' house for a few weeks now, but just recently got cracking with the Peugeot. About a week and a half ago, I drove down to Santa Cruz (popular surf/beach spot on the Northern CA coast) and picked up a sunroof cable and seal from member Tony O. Great guy, and hooked me up with a great deal. For inquiring minds, he definitely has a cool little stash that he's selling off.

It was a nice excuse to drive the Peugeot, particularly on CA Hwy 17, which has a great set of winding curves with elevation change. Car performed fantastically, no hiccups at all. The XN6 was oddly pulling really well on the inclines, I was very surprised. Maybe someone swapped it for a N9T while I was at school? :D

Anyway, came home, started cleaning up the car, and gathering up the parts that I will be using when it comes back from paint. Yesterday saw a lot of good work. Got most of the heavy/bigger stuff off the car, and today, I have several college and high school buddies coming over to lend a hand. The goal is to have the car in the shop by next weekend. We'll be continuing the dis-assembly today, getting various trim off, the rear spoiler, and power washing the under-body in preparation for undercoating. The rear door jambs will be painted so the rear seat needs to come off as well.

Hopefully at some point this week, my dad and I can remove the headliner and get to the sunroof. The car will be getting painted with the sunroof off, since the cassette has some surface rust, and it needs a new seal. I'm also going to try and tackle the bumpers, side molding, bumper extension, windshield cowl, and grille this week with paint. Hopefully Jeff and Collin can stop by later this month when it comes back from the paint shop and lend my clueless ass in regards to the sunroof and euro-light mounting some help :D

Hope I don't get carried away with the power washer today.

Cheers,

Sina

No problem Jeff!

The car will probably won't be back for another two weeks.

By the way...I found a little blue rear headrest hole ring that belongs to you and Collin.

Haha and yes, except that one is paid for by the H.O.A. Think it's worth trying to petition them to pay for the paint job? :D

hey sina -- been meaning to mention this -- we had talked a while back about adding protection for the edges of the fender under the rear spoiler...the original plastic "pads" are NLA, and it's possible to make your own. i think what i'll be doing, though, is adding clear plastic film cut to shape...this is what the porsche guys do on the 911s to protect the rear fender in front of the wheel (they call them "stone guards"), and it's also used on some sports cars to protect the leading surfaces of the hood from bugs, road debris, etc. (called "clear bras"). 3m X-Pel (most often seen on headlights) is what a lot of people use...

btw, paint should "age" 3 months or so after a re-paint before you put decals, etc. on it...

Hmm that's very interesting Andre. I definitely did not know that. I was planning on doing the pin-stripe right away, as well as the protection on the corners of the rear quarters.

My paint guy is a great guy, who's part of the local E30 community, and had a BBQ this weekend, so we were able to talk about some of the specifics. We'll be doing the full respray with various 'big pieces' off of the car, getting sprayed induvidually. Namely, the front and rear spoilers, the trunk lid, and the sunroof. We will be also doing the edges of the rear jambs. I know some of you guys would gut the entire car, but this project is on a budget, and the finish on certain parts like the front jambs are in pretty good nick as is - or could be revived a bit.

Basically, anywhere that was poorly resprayed by Maaco 15 years ago is a problem area. They did a very cheap job, and as most can tell, there is no clear on the car atm. While my paint guy manages a Maaco, he does all of the work for guys like me in the Bay area Bimmer community independently out the back, which is why I can even afford this whole thing.

The car also will be probably receiving the undercoat in the fender wells after the rest of the paint. This is because I may have not mentioned it, but several weeks ago, my friend and I spotted a foreign rust hole in the rear driver's side fender. It's only the size of a nickel, but it means that we'll be having to sand it, cut, and weld a new piece in its place. It's sorta sketch, but very minimal.

Today's task will revolve around removing the headliner and sunroof, as well as getting the mirrors, headlight surrounds, keyholes, and door pulls.

well, i don't think it's terrible to do it right away, but i've heard that you get better results with decals, etc. after the paint has set up a while. the manufacturers use large rooms full of heat lamps to cure the paint, is how they can do it right away.

your original pinstriping is gold, correct? are you going to re-do it in the original color? 'cause that looks really good.... :)

Got a lot accomplished this past week. Now all that's left is the really easy part - removing the side mirrors, door pulls, and driver/passenger door keyholes.

Sunroof is out at last! I can sense the countdown to it being towed to the shop coming on.

Also got some 16x8 squared BBS style 5's for my E30! But the tires were too big. Nothing a fresh set of 205/45-16's cannot solve. On order.

good work. when is the car going to the paint shop? and did you find a replacement sunroof gasket?

andré

merci. it was actually supposed to be in the shop 3 weeks ago :D but the guy who's doing it is super chill, and has been cool with me taking the extra time.

it's pretty much done and ready though - i've just been in san diego for the last few days looking for a house.

Did you upgrade to 5 bolt hubs, or running spacers? If running spacers - how does the car handle ruts and stuff?

Rabin

spacers, 18mm front, 20mm rear. however, i've studied the conversion pretty well, and have decided to use 318ti bits in the rear (like koll's car) and e30 m3 fronts.

haven't driven on it myself, as the tires are on order.

In case you guys missed the recent activity on the FB group, or actually bought into my horrible sense of humor (sigh) - I do indeed still have the Peugeot.

Picked it up from the paint shop this morning and got straight to work.

When I picked it up from my friend, the paint guy, I was surprised to see that he had gone above and beyond what I had expected. :D

Car got a two-stage urethane with clear on top. Don't bother asking me how much I paid for it, as I got a very "unrealistic" price for the market.

Body work that was done consisted of; pulling all of the pesky dents, and cutting/welding quite a bit of rust that was around the front windshield frame and cowl.

My STI also received new window gaskets, undercoating in all fender-wells, and thick black coating on the rockers.

The fuel-filler door, front air dam, rear spoiler, sunroof cassette, rear plate-panel, front and rear windshield were removed and painted induviudally, respectively.

I took care of the front and rear bumpers, side moldings (still on the hunt for the damn chrome striping <_< ), grille, cowl cover, C-pillar vents, and much more but I'm tired and can't remember at the moment  .

There is still A LOT to be reinstalled on the car tomorrow so I'll be getting up bright and early to a large cup of Peet's and getting back to work.

I'm headed back to San Diego next Saturday so I have 6 days to get 'er done, and buy a nice car-cover.

Car can't come with me so the next time I'll be seeing it will be in the rainy season.

I'll leave you all with some quick photos from tonight.

Cheers!

Thank you Rabin! It really feels nice to hear from fellow enthusiasts who can truly appreciate the car for everything it is.

Without the community that you keep going, I wouldn't have learned nearly as much about this fantastic car, and developed such a taste for them as well.

I remember when I joined - think I was 14 years old (?), and dreamed of installing chrome "spinners" on the car, and swapping to a turbocharged V6 (lol what?).

It was people like you who helped me develop a "real taste" in automobiles, and for that I thank you dearly!

The pleasure is very much mutual Sina. It's been a pretty great experience seeing you progress from the 14 year old, to the person you are today... Yep - I did cringe with all the talk about N9TE swaps and such, but I had similar enthusiasm and crazyness that ran through my mind as well... (And still does!)

What's been awesome is to see how that appreciation for Peugeots has continued on through mishap after setback and you just kept going, and preserving your 505 against most odds. It's immense pride that I'm following this final build as it's the culmination of all your knowledge and influences these last few years and it's incredible to see the results come out so damn nice...

It'll just be a matter of time that I make it to a West Coast get together as meeting you and seeing the car in person are definite priorities in the future.

Another West coast meet needs to happen next summer for sure.

I say think of the meet not happening this summer as all the more reason for you to come out next year. ;)

It's also pretty crazy for me to see the North American Peugeot community grow into what it is today...totally dwarfs what it was in the mid 2000's.

I really do think that our cars are actually crossing the verge of collectibility and coolness. *A lot* of people give me comments on the car whenever I take it out.

I love remembering high school (or whatever I remember of that blur) and the Peugeot being such a big part of it.

Between lunch break runs in it bottomed out with friends and music playing, driving chicks up to the panoramic views up above the SF Bay hills, and me recklessly hooning it around paved or unpaved back-roads .... we've been through a lot, and I just don't see myself giving it up anytime soon.

Here's my recap of today (9/1):

Today saw a solid amount of work.

The day started with a run for coffee and then it was straight to work.

Took quite a few many "breaks" out of the work, went to Berkeley and got distracted lol.

But then I came back and got quite a bit accomplished. Slowly (maybe quickly), but surely - it's starting to take shape!

Also a few friends came by my house and were surprised to see that: a) I still had a the Peugeot and B) it "didn't look like shit anymore".

A few brews were cracked, but overall today I completed the installation of the following:

-front grille

-headlight surrounds

-front bumper extension

-rear center line trim

-rear bumper

-reinstall on right bumper shock

-license plate lights

-hood cowl vent

-windshield washer nozzle

-windshield wipers

-rear spoiler

-trunk lid emblems

-trunk carpeting

All that is left to install on the exterior shall be taken care of tomorrow. That consists of:

-front bumper

-front aero spoiler

-front parking lights

-bosch pilot driving lights (also need to mend wires which torn in a 2009 accident lol)

-trunk keyhole and lock

-trunk latch

LAST will be the installation of:

-sunroof casette

-sunroof cassette gasket

-sunroof cable

Here are some photos from today's work.

Cheers!

After 3 hard days of carefully putting her back together again with a new smile, here she is in all (or most) of her glory. I took it to several familiar spots.

First, the house where it has lived since 1985; the house where it was photographed in front of at my parents' wedding; and back around the iconic San Francisco Bay Trail which runs through my backyard on the island.

I think it really hit me after I finished the day's work this evening with the front fascia all back together (minus the fog lights which are lost in the jungle, otherwise known as my parents' garage).

But I'm really content with the car's look at this point.

I'm going to keep the car's side clean with no side molding in order to preserve the natural Italian Pinninfarina lines ... or at least until I get tired of it.

Well, what is there left to do for now?

Install the sunroof with its gasket
Install the sunroof cable
Find some Bosch Pilot fog-lamps with amber lenses (won't likely be installed until December when I come home again)
Carefully paint the lion on the engine grille silver with a brush
Install the side markers (no side molding baby!)

...and that's about it.

I cannot thank the Peugeot community enough for all the help and inspiration that has been imparted onto me throughout this long and beautiful ride.

Please enjoy the photos from this evening - I know I will, as I go back to school for the fall and won't be around the car until the wintertime :D

Cheers,

Sina

I cannot thank the Peugeot community enough for all the help and inspiration that has been imparted onto me throughout this long and beautiful ride.

I can't tell you how inspirational it is to see your results.

What are you going to do about the side Marker lights if you leave the molding off?

Thank you Dave!

Re: side markers, I mocked one up on the rear yesterday. Think I'll be okay with them protruding for now w/o the molding.

I think long-term, I will have to refit the molding, but lets just say I'm not going to rush into it since mine still need a lot of work.

I'll also be passively looking for a nice set (maybe from a Euro spec) online, and if I do locate one, I may just go ahead and cop a euro style set.
