Tama's 505 engine mods

Gorgeous as always Tama!

Can you provide some details / size specs on the wheels on the car? Looks like the rear fender lips are rolled from what I can see as well.

As for the slipping - could the car be over powering the clutch? Or does it slip with moderate power as well?

Wow - I just re-read this whole post and Tama's engine build recipe sounds like the recipe I need to do as well. Now to start sourcing the Volvo bits and rods. Pretty sure Volvo has some decent aftermarket selections for nice parts. Edit: I took a better look at the pics in the post and got what I needed. I'm now thinking of contacting some of the custom piston places that would already have the BT21 piston AND the N9T on file to see if they could put the N9T pattern on the Volvo piston.

Thanks again for updating this thread Tama - I forgot about it and am all excited to see about sourcing parts now. Having it trouble free for so long is just confirms this is the build to go with rather than pioneering something else that just isn't proven.

very nice! :) the gold goes very well with the color scheme of your car. these rims are not 140 pcd, are they? do you use adapters or have you modified your hubs?

tama, it gets very cold in your part of the world, doesn't it? do you have a separate set of wheels and tires for winter, or do you not drive the car at that time of year?

it's very exciting to see such a well-loved, heavily modified 505!

Thanks guys!

The rims are 4x100 and they are fitted by using custom made adapters. Adapters are mounted to the original hub and they are 25 mm thick. The wheels are 16" and 7,5" wide in front with ET38 and 9" wide with ET20. The rear wheel is REALLY close to the rear fender so I might need to take few millimeter from the adapter...

The clutch only slips in full throttle and only with 4th and 5th gears.. With 3rd the wheels start to slip, no the clutch especially when wet.. :)

Andre: Yes, In Finland we use winter tires because we get heavy snow during the winter.. Usually the winter months are from November to April.. I used to drive the in the wintertime as well but now a days I drive it only in summer time to prevent rusting..

Bean: Let me know if you need something information! I will give you all my megasquirt setups if needed... And of course for everyone else as well.. :) just ask..

Thanks Tama! I bought VEMS v3.3, and I'll have to see if it can still use a MSII set up. They used to use the same tuning software / maps - but not sure if that is still the case. Nick Cota currently has the whole set up as he was going to fit it to his race car and get it tuned by a VEMS specialist. Once he had a chance to get his own VEMS I'd get it back with the tune that was developed as a starting plan.

I've already done some research on seeing what is available for rods and pistons. Ideally if I were to get new pistons I would ask them to use the B21ET piston design with the N9T pattern on top - with a shallower compression bowl in the piston to raise compression a bit. 8.5 or 9:1 would be perfect with a good stand alone system.

If your clutch can spin the tires in third, and it slips in 4th and 5th I'd still suspect the clutch is being overpowered. Much harder to spin a tire at higher speeds so the next weakest link is the clutch. Slipping the clutch is better than blowing up the diff or transmission though!

I've also started on modified version of your modification list you first posted as a build guide for myself. Once I get it cleaned up and sorted I'll post it up.

One thing you might like Tama - I am working on modifying the stock manifold to be a T25 flange, with the hope of fitting an EFR 6258 turbo to it. It should spool faster than any other turbo on the market, and it still supports up to ~440 HP.

I did some research to see if there were any readily available rod solutions for Saab rods - but no luck. With Saab no longer being made - it occurred to me that they might not be the best source for build parts going forward either. (I was hoping there was a Saab aftermarket similar to Volvo's)

While looking at rods I compared similar lengths and found Nissan SR20DET rods and Honda K20 Turbo spec rods were fairly close in length, super strong, readily available and relatively cheap.

It'd be nice to mix and max with production parts from a cost and future supply standpoint - so might be worth checking out.

Saab is rare around here like the Peugeot is - very few cars on the road, so any parts I could get would have to be used, and I'd have to get them shipped.

Using the B21ET pistons and custom rods is likely the easiest answer - but still searching for options for an aftermarket Saab rod that's decently priced.

Hello, nice car with some nice modifications!

I have put a turbo engine in my 504, slighty modified, and i think i will use megasquirt too, could i get your msq-file?

I will though use distributor ignition, and only two triggerpoints, but otherwise the same.
